Just came across some great old school Pusher holds but the previous owner had a thing for writing all over the holds in sharpie marker. Ive tried rubbing alcohol and muriatic acid but neither got rid of the sharpie. All ive been able to do is dull the marker. Anyone have any good tricks i could try? Im about to sand the marker off but thats gonna look rough!

grain alcohol, used to work in a lab that used sharpies to label everything. My lame ass job was to clean everything, plastic, glass or metal...this insaine 195 proof grain alcohol did the job. Probably hard to get the stuff outside of a chemistry lab, but 151 is pretty close.

Acetone will strip sharpie like its nothing. Acetone is your best option. However test it on the holds first for its a fairly nasty solvent and it can discolor / dissolve some soft plastics. You can find acetone at Wal-Mart.

Rubbing alcohol will do a great job . And you probably already have some, making it the better choice since it's free.

whatever you do, don't damage the texture... (i've never tried sanding holds, but I don't think that would be good for it)

But it is acetone. So test it first. I've never really cared about sharpy on a hold, and over a long enough time period, with enough wear, it fades away.

You can get denatured alcohol from any hardware store. It's high proof grain alcohol with additives to (hopefully) keep you from drinking it. Acetone is also readily available at the hardware store. Each will remove Sharpie really well.

The hold's texture might make it difficult for the solvent to get into all the nooks and crannies, however. You may have to soak and/or scrub the area to really remove it all.

You could definitely try to use some soap and a scrub brush to get it off.

Edit: I think SoIll has some climbing specific hold soap.

I'm strongly tempted to surreptitiously attach a few of those to the wall I work at. Just to screw with people.

That would be hilarious.
People would go to grab them, and then they would rip off the wall, or just fall apart.

noo.. it's just regular soap.. for your hands.. it's normal soap.. shaped like a hold. they just pour soap into some hold molds and it's funny ha ha

pet's that ain't right.. though if it was a safe fall, putting it at the crux of some tough boulder problem would be pretty funny

Ahh,

I was hoping it was actually hold soap. Might work for cleaning holds though.

So far, several things havent worked.

1. Dish soap and scrub brush (scrubbing ridiculously hard!) - No impact
2. Rubbing alcohol and scrubbing - No impact
3. WD40 and scrubbing - No impact
4. #2 and #3 combined - No impact
5. Alcohol hand sanitizer and scrubbing - No impact
6. Weak concentration of muriatic acid - Slight fading with TONS of scrubbing (arms gave out before the marker did)
7. Strong concentration of acid - Noxious fumes, burnt out arms, slight fading....and still no real impact

Im on a personal mission to get the right answer for this. Im gonna try the acetone and hairspray tonight.

I really dont know why the previous owner wanted to write quirky little sayings on the outside of the holds like "squeeze me or big eyed willie or pull up hard" but i vow to remove it without seriously damaging the friction of the hold.

Hopefully you'll be able to get it off.

If not just put em up. It will eventually wear off due to the shoes rubbing against them and such.

methinks that the problem is not gonna be easily solved with any solvent. Alcohol should (and does) erase sharpie ink pretty easily from smooth surfaces. So does acetone. The problem might be the porosity of the holds. If the ink has already permeated the surface of the holds it might be next to impossible to clean.
I had a similar problem trying to erase sharpie marks from a marble counter. At the end, we had to sand and polish the whole area.
Good luck

Not all nail polish removers contain acetone.

I only bring this up because the OP mentioned he was going to try acetone tonight. If by that he meant he was going to try nail polish remover, then he should know that if that doesn't work it might be because there's no actual acetone in his remover.

Two possible suggestions:

First, I know if you write on sharpie on a whiteboard you can write over it with whiteboard marker (dry-erase kind) and the permanent ink comes off too. Tried it myself, kinda fun actually. Not sure if it'll work on a climbing hold, especially if the ink is really set into the pores of the plastic.

Second, try this
http://www.mrclean.com/...roducts/eraser.shtml

We use these to scrub off sharpie from our route tags and they work like a champ. Again, depending on how far the ink is set into the hold it might not work for your situation.
