Sleeping 3 people in a double portaledge?

Three people going on a 5-6 day winter ascent two days from now. Has anyone had any experience with sleeping 3 people in a double portaledge? The ledge is totally open inside, no "separation" in the middle, only a cord from the top to the middle of the floor.

I suspect it will be cramped, but if anyone have had any experience with this I'd appreciate feedback.

Thanks Smile

Two people on a double is pretty right doesn't sound like your be very comfy or able to lay down and if weather is bad/cold/ windy cooking in there could be troublesome. If you'll be doing long (time) aid pitches someone could always catch cat naps. I would say pool your money together before you leave and get a single ledge for your third.

Just experience with two. Our 3rd couldn't come.

I would love to read your trip report when you return!

Hmmm, thinking of getting hold of a hammock which we then could mount diagonally under the portaledge, and we could take turns sleeping in it.

My only concern is if the ledge then will be loaded in an way that might twist it, or weaken it. If so we can always use slings from all the four corners so the weight of the hammock will be distributed evenly.

Short answer, not me,no sir,uh-uh. Man talk about a little too much suffering.
Longer answer, if there is a chance of someone staying on lead through the night and an occasional natural ledge, then maybe, but bogged by weather as someone above mentioned could end in the bivy from hell. A hammock provides no storm protection which is to me, why I have a fly. Once committed to the Point Of No Return, it would be hard to protect all three of you, and structurally it could possibly get pulled off, but not something I would personally commit to.
Nice to see someone else ready to wall this winter. May I pry as to where?

On a similar topic, I've always wondered how my single portaledge would fit me and my wife, who is on the small side (5'2" 110 lbs). not sure when/if we would ever use it, though, since I do not really like aid climbing OR grade VI's.

Now that's a killer pic! It seems the third guy is backing out now, not motivated enough. But the remaining two of us are super motivated.

It is a nce steep wall in Norway near Stavanger called Tauveggen. It's only about 1300 feet, bit it will be the first winter ascent of that wall, so we're looking forward to it. Leaving thursday if all goes as planned.

Sounds COLD dude.

If you have time check out what your fellow hard men are up to down Patagonia way....

(can you imagine a 4 day stay in a portaledge with THREE PEOPLE???!!!)

The pic (I'm guessing you know) is of Wolfgang Gullich on Riders on the Storm, in Patagonia. The link ^^^^^ is 'on topic.'

Cheers

It's supposed to be not so windy, some snow, temp. no lower than 19F (-7C). So actually I wouldn't mind sleeping in the hammock, as long a it's not too windy. But not every night. Would make some really cool pictures :-)
