Adding to the arsenal

Mods: If you've got some overpowering urge to move this to Soapbox, I don't care.

To the shooters amongst us:

Local sporting good store has a flyer in today's Snoozepaper. They have a Ruger 1022 rifle (.22 cal) for $239. As much fun as .22s are to shoot, and as cheap as .22 ammo is, and considering my other two guns are a Glock 19 and a Remington 870 (neither of which is conducive to an inexpensive day of plinking at soda cans,) I'm giving some consideration to purchasing this.

Anyone have one (Ruger 1022)? Shoot one? Pros/cons? Feedback? Opinions? Uneducated guesses?

Mahalo.

Check it out. The 10/22 is mentioned as well as the companies quality. A semiauto can go through ammo in a hurry. They are fun though.

This will stay here, until the debate starts about whether or not a person should be able to just go around shooting things. I can tell you from recent personal experience that multiple bursts of a 308 will fuck up your climbing game.

Two of my best friends have this rifle. Both love it.

It's one of the most reliable and reputable rifles available. It is also one of the most upgradable.

EDIT:

Hopefully it shows (facebook, ugh.)

Now we're blaming the lack of redpoint on the wankers a few miles away with a .308?

Had a friend in HS that had one. Pretty decent rifle. Kind of short as I remember it.

I have an old Marlin semi-auto that I got in ~6th grade. Great fun. The ammo cost is also quite right.

I've had a Ruger 10/22 for 17 years and all I can say is that it's a great little rifle. Well made, accurate, and durable.

I would whole heartily recommend buying the Ruger 10/22 for general target shooting. I would also recommend buying a few extra 10 round Ruger 10/22 magazines as I've found these to work flawlessly with the rifle.

That being said I will warn you against the use of non Ruger aftermarket high capacity magazines (25 plus rounds). The rifle is not intended for a high rate of fire (ie shooting off 25 rounds in 30 seconds). The Ruger 10/22 is designed to work with the company made and patented cylindrical 10 round magazines. This combined with the general poor quality of the aftermarket magazines will inevitable lead to repetitive jamming and eventually damage to the receiverof the rifle.

They were $206 when I sold them in 1999/2000. I remember that a firearms dealer bought them from us and he did not have his resale sales tax permit but he bough all 6 that we had on hand at the time. That is quite a good deal if they have only gone up less than 20 percent in 9 or 10 years.

I’ve had a 10/22 as well for many years and would recommend it as well. I have experienced no issues with non-Ruger magazines (both banana clips and a 50 round), non standard amo (tracers) or with after market parts (mine has a Dragunov stock).

It depends on what you want. If you want a fun-plunker + varmit gun (my use) the Ruger is perfect. If you want a precision target, again Ruger. Cheap and plentiful add ons make it fun.

I've had one for over 20 years. It's reliable, easy to shoot and easy to clean. I used it to teach my son to learn to handle a firearm safely at the NRA indoor range in Fairfax, VA. I've had a few .22's, including the Nylon 66, and the Ruger 10/22 is by far my favorite.

I use both the 10 shot mag that came with it and 25 and 30 shot banana aftermarket mags. Make sure you get mags with steel lips. Some are sold with just plastic lips and they break quickly.
