I have to agree with fiend, he's got his stuff in line, and every bit of it is correct! However, don't forget about all of the climbers who do not wish to make themselves known, who have also made ascents of 5.14c's and d's. I have seen some of these guys. Jake out

i think we're missing a few euros. wolfgang gullich definitely belongs up top, in my mind. that guy was way ahead of his time. and what about the huber bros? those dudes are terrific all arounders and have both made FA's in the 14c/d range. i'm going to go out on a limb and say for great climbers in history- Robyn erbesfield. i heard she onsighted five 5.13's in the same day. name one other woman that's ever done that!

This is like asking who your favorite band is. Impossible for me to answer. There is probably some unkown guy or girl who can dust Sharma off in a matter of seconds, but remains to be unknown. I have lots of climbers who I like. Lynn Hill has got to be in the list. She has some of the greatest accomplishments ever known to mankind. Also I really like watching Klem climb. The guy is freaking amazing at what he does. Sharma, I like his style and his attitude for the sport. Graham, because he is focus on ticking off the hardest climbs in the world. Dean Potter for having the biggest set of balls on this planet. As for the best climber in the world. Does it matter? Its too hard to judge, there is no Michael Jordan of our sport. There is a bunch of elite people, but not one person who stands above the rest.

I know this is an old thread, but noone ever mentioned Steve McClure: Northern Lights, possibly 15a, except noone will go to England to try a repeat. And recently onsighted two,TWO!!! 14a's. Maybe not the best, but has got to be on the list. Alex Huber, 3 all natural 8c+/9a routes like eight years ago. Iker Pou, Ramon Julia, etc. Just scads of Euros we never hear about!

Man dont dis Sharma! how many 5.15s have you done? no one else even comes close to sending the thing either accept maybe Dave. Chris can onsite 5.14 if thats not one of the best climbers i dont know what is. also I think his boulder is twice as impresive as his sport climbing!

Wolfgang Guellich He climbed UIAA 11 more than 10 years before all the other guys. He died much too early. Alex Huber Great climber not only in sport climbing also able to climb very hard trads redpoint.

Wolfgang Guellich for the fellas and Josune Berezatzu or however you spell her last name from the Basque territory in Spain for the ladies get my vote. Although the last post was right about the Huber brothers they rule.

Today we have no one in sport climbing (or climbing in general) who is so completely outdoing everyone that s/he stands out alone from the pack. For every 5.14, there's someone else doing another to match or harder. For every 5.15, the same thing. But it does go to show how advanced Wolfgang was. He 14d 10 years ago. Only a couple others have done so since. Of today's pack, it would have to be Sharma because all he does is boulder, but then put his mind to it and sent Realization. Dave Graham comes to mind as well because of how quickly his ascents are. But again, there are others in that same range of climbing, so no one stands apart. For the women however, only one in today's pack comes to mind - Josune. No one else has come close recently. Most top women barely hit the upper 13s. But again, Lynn Hill did 14a how many years ago? So she's not that great compared to the rest, but she is pushing the boundaries. If she hits 5.15, then the game is truly on.

hey mreardon, you forgot to mention both Katie Brown and Beth Rodden, both of whom have gotten .14s, I believe. But yeah, I agree that no other female even comes close to Josune. She is certainly one of the top sport climbers in the world, regardless of gender. I really wish that the American climbing media would let us know more about the European scene, though. I'm sure that there are other hard climbing females out there. as for top sport climber of all time, no contest, dudes... it's gotta be Wolfgang.

Actually Camhead, I didn't forget them. My point was that Lynn did 14a I believe in 1993? Since then, yes there are a couple women who have crossed that level once or twice, but Josune seems to be consistently doing so and is the likely contender to do a 14d/15a (and she does so while working a 40 hour week!). But generally speaking, the women are like the men. In the last 10 years, there has been no real advancement of the grades. So the "hard" men and women sport climbers really are not that strong relatively speaking, though there is a lot of potential. But the reality is that in the last 10 years, climbers have advanced sport climbing ONE letter grade, most of which has been based on one climb that was an extension, another that is a link-up, and the rare one or two that were established from scratch. Not that impressive in my opinion. I do believe however that if Sharma or Fred Nicole decided to put as much energy into establishing new sport or trad lines as they do bouldering, we would soon be in the 15b/c category, and Josune would be right there with them. I also think that Tommy Caldwell will be right there with them. That would be impressive as hell and good for the sport.

fivetenman, When Sharma climbs the hardest climb in the world (Akira), then and ONLY THEN can he be called the best.

Sharma is the strongest, but not "the best". Tough to say, I'd vote DG, but I havent read much about Nicole or the rest of the Euros.

Well it's as hard to say who the "best" is as it is to say what the "hardest climb in the world" is. Maybe the hardest KNOWN or CLIMBED climb. I vote for Chris Sharma though

I find it disturbing that some people get mad at someone who thinks that Chris is the best climber in the world. Get your head out of your ass and realize that the answers are totally subjective. my votes go to Chris and Dave. peace

junkie, Two reasons why Akira isn't the hardest route in the world 1. Akira is just long boulder problem 2. Akiras all drilled Get your facts straight
