Cam range increase?

Howdy folks,

First the question:
How much on an increase in cam range do you think would be needed to gain the interest of cam manufacturers?

I have a novel idea for increasing the range of a relatively-normal cam design while still maintaining a normal cam angle. I'm wondering how much of an improvement in cam range would be needed for a cam company to take interest.

The design tweak is fairly simple and would not add greatly to the cam's complexity. In fact, it could probably be implemented into most cam designs fairly easily.

Sorry to be vague, but I don't want to give away the secret!
Wink

Thoughts?

It would have to be light and cheap to manufacture.

Probably 10% increase or so - less than that probably wouldn't stand out in the stats. But, this is a pretty arbitrary guess.

My design tweak adds a little mass/metal to one set of lobes but would in turn remove it from the other set, making it weight add/loss neutral.

It can just as easily be implemented into TCU designs as well, and would not add any width to the head of the cam (that I can foresee, at least).

I made a little cardboard mock-up of the design using the template from the Dirtbag Cam layout which uses a 14 degree cam angle. I blew up the template 200% to make it easier to work with.

(My math sucks, so help me out here!)

In it's minimum-usable state (but not overcammed) it measures just under 4" across. In it's maximum it's just over 6.25" (almost tipped out, but not quite). I believe (?) I'm getting an extra 1/2" expansion over the standard design.

If you are not using math then I would be surprised that your 'improvement' is real. I could be wrong but alot of thought has been put into cam theory and development. I'd be surprised if you discovered something new just but playing with cardboard.

That said hopefully for you, you do have something. Good on you for putting in the effort.

Incidently Super cams get larger expansion range by swapping weight on one side with weight on the other. One big set of lobes and one small set. But they get a big gain.

I spent a while recently thinking about cam designs. I cam up with a a handful of concepts that give ranges between 2:1 and 3:1. Unfortunately many of these added extra complexity like sliding axles or the use of 3 dimensional surfaces. The best dead simple, almost no moving parts, can't fail design I could come up with gave a range of 1.66:1

There are at least two users in RC that happen to be cam manufacturers. I'd suggest to contact them directly if you have a cool idea but don't want to give too many specifics in a public forum.
Good luck

Acorneau,
I'm here and would be happy to discuss cam ideas with you. I have a good NDA that I can email you to CYA. BTW, we license a lot of products and many of them started out here on rc.com with an NDA exchange.

lol, seriously!!

I don't know if I'm dyslexic, but I do have a tendancy to flip words/phrases/numbers around in my head. It's really weird.
