Hi,
I have been given varying information about this and was just wondering what gear I would need for bugaboo approaches.
My partner and I are headed over there August 10-20, but we have come from australia, and only have sturdy hiking boots, an axe and a pole each. Is this enough to be safe?

Also, will we need to bring our own chicken wire?
thanks very much for the help!

I did a fair amount of climbing BITD in the Bugs and never brought or needed crampons. As for the marmot barriers, I can't help---they didn't used to be a problem, but I can't imagine that you'd find any chicken wire at the end of the road (unless, of course, departing parties just leave it there).

It is my understanding that there are quite a few fences left in the parking lot these days so unless it's crazy busy there should be a fence for your car.

I was there the same week in August three years ago. At that time there was plenty of chicken wire to wrap around your car. I believe it is for protection from porcupines, not marmots. Porcupines like to eat brake lines and fan belts. The marmots just want your food (there are steel boxes at Applebee campground for food storage).

In 2006, descending the Snowpatch/Bugaboo col could be done without crampons -- 300' of rappels got you below the bergschrund, and it was pretty stepped out from there. Though steep enough that you would be happy to have an axe. However, I don't know how you would climb the col without crampons. There are plenty of climbs you can do without climbing the col, but if anything on your tick list requires climbing the col then my guess is you will need crampons.

We brought a pump, and most everyone we saw had one too. Glacial melt tends to have lots of particulate matter and tablets won't do anything to remove it.

How buggy are the Bugs this time of year? At Applebee and above?

I just got back from the Bugs yesterday. The col is in MANK condition, I wouldn't reccomend going over it. This means no pons or ice tool needed (unless you do go over it, then bring the full football pads and life insurance). Actually, you may need it for some decents, but there's nothing too bad...
There's more then enough chicken wire and logs at the car park.
