Given where the camera man is, it looked to me like there might be something in the wall behind him to the right.
Does a pillar touch the ground and a dagger hang like a stalactite?
I can't seem to get any terminology right today.

That's always been the termnology I've heard and used as well: if it touches the ground, it's a pillar. If not, it's. Dagger (or 'cicle). Either way, that's a fall I wouldn't want to take.

I've always wondered what would happen if that stuff took place while you had a screw on the icicle and the rope clipped into it, even if the climber was actually above the part that launches. My guess is that everyone connected to the rope would be toast, or would the power of the thing be enough to cut the rope or rip the screw before climber and belayer sustain big injuries? Any known cases in ice climbing history?

There is a story where one came loose on the late Alex Lowe. He rode the pillar to the ground like a surfboard and jumped off when the moment was right.
He'd probably have died if he'd placed a screw (he probably didn't even have a rope with him either).

It doesn't look like it's the same guy, but Urs Odermatt took quite a ride in 2005 when he went down with a collapsing pillar. The best collection of pics I could find are in this pdf: http://www.bergundsteigen.at/...20saeule%20ab%29.pdf
As he writes, it was a 25 meter fall with 30 tons of ice. Landed in the snow and was practically uninjured.

Jon Krakauer wrote about the scene I think you're talking about in a forward in Jennifer Lowe-Anker's book about Alex. According to Krakauer, he was roped up, being belayed by Jack Tackle. He was out on a dagger, decided to hammer in an ice hook, and the whole thing broke off while he was hammering. Alex and the dagger dropped 35 feet to a ledge. The dagger exploded and Alex landed on his feet.
