hey guys! just needed some advice on sport climbing in new york. I'm currently in the bay area and got a job in nyc, but i'm deciding whether or not to take it because of the climbing! currently hate the job in sf, but love the climbing. I just started sport climbing and am still pretty beginner for outdoors climbing, and i know the bay area has some great areas, but I wanted to see how good the new york area was for sport climbing. From reading around, it's mostly trad, and super difficult to get to...and the weather is a big hindrance on climbing a lot. Let me know what you guys would do! thanks, Justin

Not so much. But why not learn trad? It's not as scary as you think. And I think it's pretty easy to find partners for the Gunks. Just post here with info - say you moved from San Fran, sport climb to 5.x, and wanna learn trad. It'll happen eventually. Especially if you offer to drive/pay gas/buy beer (or food). I'd offer to take you out myself if I didn't suck so bad.

Justin, There is reportedly some sports climbing at Poison Ivy wall in West Point - just an hour up north from NYC. And if you really are serious about sports climbing, Rumney is only 5 hour drive up north. There are lot of sports climbers in NYC, just befriend them in local indoor gyms. And there is a lot of dry climbing to be had even in or after the rain if you climb 5.11 and up... I believe 5-hour drive is bismal by Western standards, it's like a day-trip to most, and for Los Angelenos I believe it's like their daily commute ;)
