I have a question for a non-climbing application. I am getting married in 2 weeks and have a 4' diameter pole in the center of a rotunda that I am not allowed to tape or nail to. I want to attach something to it so I can attach runners to this pole. Question: Is there a version of a prusik knot that I can pull to tighten and then when I release tension it stays tight? I want to wrap some cord around the pole and use it as the anchor for my runners to the other walls. I appreciate any help. ~Taylor

on a pole that wide i think a prussick would be very excessive. if you put a loop into the end of some rope and just pass the other end through the loop you'll probably be able to tighten it enough that it'll stay.

If you want it to look more decorative (after all you did say it was for a wedding) you could use a Turk's Head knot around the pole. now there's a statement about a knot that could be twisted

Tie an 8 on a bight in one end of the cord. Run the other end around the pole and stick it through the 8 on a bight. Voila, the girth hitch. Tie off the running end the way you finish a truckers hitch. Or many other ways, but tie it off and you're good to go. Congrats on getting married.

Clove hitch. There's an interesting variation of the clove hitch called the handcuff knot.

Actually I think he is referring to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handcuff_knot It's a great one to show unsuspecting kids that get too rowdy at the crag yeah, or if you're not a chi-mo you could just use it to get freaky with a grown woman.

It's a good knot... at the the crag, in the gym... highly recommended for every college student.

haha... Thanks guys. Never really thought to use the clove hitch release that I usually put on the haul bag. Thanks for all the replies, and if anyone wants to join us (Climbers or Jumpers)...... There will be 20 of us BASE jumping a small cliff near Los Angeles, CA the morning of my wedding! 11/14 ~Taylor

Ah, that one...the "Constrictor" is actually used in rescues when someone has to be taken off of a structure, usually a suicide attempt or someone that is drugged out. Back on topic, use a timber hitch.

Any kind of knot would work with a length of 7/16" bungee cord. Unless you're going to be really yarding on the runners, in which case it's clearly a death-trap.
