I know this has probably been discussed once, but i was too lazy to look. How long is the shelf life for a partially used harness?

Wow, a lot of factors are involved in a "partially" used harness. How long was it used for, how many falls, what type of weather, how was the original condition, how old is it, what's the reputation for that specific model...?
Just buy a new harness bro.

Good question, and would be interesting to see if anyone has ever had any unsuspected harness failure. Yet, this is perhaps one of the cheapest components of climbing gear.

This might be my opinion, butr I'd never use someone else's equipment unless they are one of my good friends and I know the history of the gear. Unknown used gear can equal death.

it's my dads old harness. He climbed in it for probably a year or so with no large falls. After that it sat on the shelf for five or six years. He wants to get back into cimbing now, but i worry about the harness. (he's really cheap, so it'll take a lot to get him to pay forty bucks for another.)

I've been told 5 years or so, so you're right on the edge. Petzl recommends 2-3 years (just for nylon decay), in which case, you're a tad late. I was expecting somewhere around 20 years (like my dad's old harness). I really need to get a spare harness, especially since my girlfriend wants to get into it. And I wouldn't worst enemy in that old Forester.
