There is A LOT of great climbing near you. New Jack City is probably where you want to start this time of year. Oh btw devils punchbowl sucks compared to any of the other climbing areas in SoCal.

Not saying you're wrong, because I've heard others say this too, but what don't you like about the punchbowl?

The routes I've been on there have been fun. I've climbed at most of the L.A. based sport climbing destinations, and I can't say that the punchbowl seemed markedly worse than the rest. Maybe a little scarier given the nature of some of those slab routes... but enjoyable just the same. (Although, God, bring us back Williamson one of these days)

My problem with the Punchbowl is the loose brittle conglomerate rock that is the Punchbowl. Don’t get me wrong if it was the only place around to climb or it was close to where I lived I would have been there all the time, I was just saying compared to everything else around it wasn’t worth the drive to me. My favorite places to climb when I lived out there were first and for most Tahquitz, then J-tree, Bishop, New jack, Echo Cliffs, Williamson, and Big Bear. This time of year I spent all my time in J-tree, Bishop (on the long weekends) or New Jack and the summer I went to Echo, Williamson, Big Bear, Tahquitz, or Eastern Sierras (on the long weekends). The one place I wish I had gone while I lived there was the Needles but I’ll make it there one day.

Edit to add: I didn’t mention Yosemite but I still drive out from here to go climb there so I don’t really miss it or think of it as a SoCal spot.

Edit agian to add: The last time I was there was New Years day several years ago, we had three people, I was the one watching when the climber knocked a block the size of a car tire off and hit the belayer on the shoulder. Now the climber should have never touched the block to begin with but he was new and didn’t know how to read the rock yet. Our local monument isn’t much better as far as quality of rock and I climb there all the time but I drive 5-10 minutes to get there and I passed three really good climbing spots to get to the Puchbowl so…

San Diego has a number of spectacular climbing spots. I'd say the "best" are Mt. Woodson for some good old fashioned crack training, and the 3 large back country multipitch faces that have been extensively developed in the last decade or so.

(here's some places not mentioned yet)

El Cajon Mountain (long hike in though)
Malibu Creek
New Jack or Apple Valley
Tahquitz/Suicide
Valley of the Moon (by the border)
Big Rock (if you like som run out slab climbing)
Brickyard (if you count Santa Barbara area)

There's a bunch to climb and plenty of guide books to lead the way.
