I just finished for the second time 'Snow Sense' by Jill Fredston and Doug Fesler. Great book!

What other good avy books are out there? Something that starts to get into Avy II preferably.

If I pick up an older book from the used book store, is the info going to be out of date? Say...mid eighties.

Thanks

Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain by Bruce Tremper

Tons of technical detail.

To some extent, yes - we've learned an awful lot since then. I firmly second the Tremper book recommendation.

One of the BEST avalanche related books I have used in my courses is:

Secrets of the Snow: Visual Clues to Avalanche and Ski Conditions.

By: Edward R. LaChapelle

This book has a wealth of information in it that a lot of the other "avalanche books," don't have.

Buy it, read it, reread it....Smile

I agree with both the tremper book and the lachapelle book. Both stellar books.

Lachapelle is a great intro, and is good for common sense understanding. Tremper gives a solid foundation that one would want with level 1 or 2 avalanche training. If you want something incredibly in depth, don't go to tremper.

The book(s) by Werner Munter.
Dont know if they got translated, but if you want to aproach that theme from a scientific standpoint, he is probaly the way to go.
(albeit hard to read)

A new edition of Tony Daffern's book was recently released.
Backcountry Avalanche Safety: Skiers, Climbers, Boarders and Snowshoers

Good book.
