I've been having this issue on/off for about the last year. I get this sharp, throbbing pain around my hip flexor that radiates down to my knee and also around back near my sciatic nerve. It started happening after I started climbing last year, but it never happens right after climbing and I can't correlate it to any certain activity or movement that brings it on. It always happens totally outta the blue. But since it never happened before I climbed I assume its related to climbing somehow? I've tried anti-inflammatories and heat/ice but nothing seems to help. It just goes away all on its own after a day or two of misery. Has anyone else had this happen? Any ideas of what could be causing this?

Haleymay, I've had a little experience with this. Unfortunately it can take a long time for your hip flexor to heal, even when you feel better it can still be injured. In my experience nothing seems to help as much as a good warm-up, cool-down, routine and consistent and thorough stretching. Also I take a supplement for rock climbers that helps with tendon nutrition and general recovery (VitaRack). It's probably not what you want to hear but a long rest period and a good routine go a long way.

Haleymay, your set of symptoms is a little troubling. A strained hip flexor tends to really hurt, then slowly but steadily improve. It doesn't "come and go" for no reason. If you were in my office, I'd do a very thorough lumbar screen. L1 refers to inguinal crease, all femoral nerve roots can refer to anterior thigh, and you might feel pain all the way around to your back. It can seem to come and go for no reason. It all fits.

Ok, now I'm kinda freaked. Are you thinking this could be something pretty serious? Do I need to see a specialist or will a general practicioner know what kind of tests to run? I've just been thinking it was a strained muscle this whole time :(

Not necessarily a big problem. It's a good sign your symptoms are intermittent. I know I'm biased, but I'd look for a really good PT. Personally, I'd rather have an uncomplicated disk bulge than a torn labrum.

Sounds like a back problem to me. Stay off the anti-inflammatories, they just mask the symptoms. Stretch like they said do a good warm up as well. A hip flexor would be a big deal. Everyone has back problems.
