If you have wheels and time - Seneca or the New River, both in WV

first, if you have a whole week to devote to climbing, why would you go to virginia (that's where i live, and it's not exactly a mecca) i assume you have other reasons for being in va, so where will you be and how much time will you have? around dc, there's enough to keep you occupied for 2-3 days, almost all toproping...scattered crags in shenandoah np...seneca and franklin are 3 hours away and good for a full week down in the southwest around blacksburg? new river gorge is close and good for several weeks or head to nc richmond/central va? head to nova anywhere else? you're sol

Locally, there is Great Falls but it's toproping only, the routes are short but technical. There are also other locations within 5 hrs such as Franklin for sport climbing (<3hrs), Rocks State Park, MD (2.5 hrs), Chickies Rocks PA etc but it prob won't be worth while.

in rockingham county there is hidden rocks, hone quarry, rawley springs, second mountain, union springs, big oak crags, and dictum ridge. I lived out there last summer and found numerous spots. Alot is under developed but it is there.

at hidden rocks for routes you are looking at a 5 to an 11d range. hone quarry very easy to a 12b. rawley springs has a 13 project called rockingham county super crack. second mountain is mainly bouldering area with enough problems to keep you busy ranging from V0 to V8. dictum has up to a 12a. and chimney rock up to a 11c. otherwise I agree with the other posts if you are going to be in rockingham county you may as well go to WV it is right on the border. Seneca is the place. Or new river gorge...

Well, the crowds are only on the trails - step 2 feet off-trail and you'll not meet anyone, probably not even another climber. It's a minimum hour hike in to any of the crags. One of the closest - Sunset Walls - is closed until mid-June due to peregrine's nesting. Certainly worth every ounce of effort - this is the best climbing area in the state. You just can't beat great granite...

Within 5 hours of Fairfax I'd recommend Seneca for trad and Franklin for sport. You can get both at the New but basically only 1 pitch climbs and it's probably over 5 hours from Fairfax. Old Rag would be close and fairly good too, but as Michael pointed out Sunset is closed and it would be best to do it with someone who new the area.
