I do NOT currently own a computer. I have acces to the through work, the coffee house, and even public libraries.

I'm going to break down and buy one. But I don't know too much about them. I want a top of the line one, that's reasonably priced, seeing as how I'll only use it for the Net and Resumes.

I'm leaning towards the Dell w. Pentium 4 (-$900) or their Laptop with Pentium 3(-$1300), both come with printers. I'd really like a laptop since I'm on the road so much.

Can anybody tell me if these are worth the $$$, or if I can get a better deal elsewhere. I also need information on an ISP that I can use anywhere in the US with unlimited Internet access.

Thanx,
rrrADAM

And I hate AOL, so don't even go there. And Compusevere is the same thing, so don't go there either.

I'll remind you, I'm only going to use this for the Net and updating my resumes. I don't need to process SETIs radiotelescope data here.

How much is this ???

I have a friend who owns a $1.5 million bussiness making computers. I want a name brand, with great service, laptop, and a fast as f*ck nationwide connection.

Since I use freemail and RC.com, I don't need bells and whistles in my ISP.

I use a DELL Latitude series laptop. I run windows 2000 Professional and I have never had the thing crash. I think it's worked great for me, and I have it on 24 hours a day.

Go with the Dell Laptop. I have a Dell Desktop PC and a Dell Laptop. I swear by them. This is also what I use at work. You are right about the namebrand bro. Dell has 24/7 tech support, and can be of help even when you are on the road. That is a good price to. Rock on.

Ask yourself, why a laptop. I relaize you are on the road a tonne, btu Laptops tend to be somewhat fragle, not to mention expensive to repair. Whatever you do , if you get a laptop, get the extendo major warentee. Mor eoften then not if they need repairing it's not worth it. This is from an IT roomie of mine. For what you need, anythign out there will do you just fine Adam. You could probably even get a LT under $1500 as long as you don't NEED the super upgraded, toptoptop of the line model.

Dell has pretty a pretty good nation wide service policy too.

Dell is good, Gateway is nothing to sniff at either - I had one for three years with no problems. If you get a laptop, do yourself a favor: get insurance. Laptop theft is out of control. I read an article just this evening about it. If you (or anyone else)want a copy I'll send it, but it's rather long to post.

Another thing - get only what you need for what you want. You don't need the top of the line for what you profess to be using it for. I'm using a P-III 500Mhz that a friend of mine trashed for a P-IV 1Gig, and with a cable modem mine flies just as fast as my friends does. Dell refurbished machines have the warranty and support (last I checked) and are cheaper options.

Macs are great for all things digital (typically used for intensive graphics work) while PCs are more for the normal work environment. Word processing, number crunching, etc. Go to a Mac, Gateway or Dell dealership - play with their toys - talk to their representatives. Go to Borders and read the latest PC mags, especially the articles on the ups and downs of the products. Consumer Reports is another place to look. Go to the computer experts for advice, not us climbers, even if some of us do work in the field.

For the sweet everlasting love of Jesus do not by a compaq! I would rather have spent my 800 bucks smashing compaqs and degrading them than buying this computer. You get an average of 24 hours before It freezes up. Bare in mind I am simply downloading during the night, only running one program. Ask anyone who knows anything about compaqs: They Suck. It ain't worth raisin your blood pressure 100 points because it freezes up right after you finish your resume' and forgot to save. TRUST ME ON THIS.
