I am wanting to make a campus board at my home. I have the layout and everything but I need to find out what material is best for the rungs. I heard the Metolius ones are spruce. Any thing better out there? It might be outside, is there a better wood for outside? Or should I just by the Metolius rungs?

My rungs are made out of standard 2x4's that I cut up on my table saw. I think those are usually pine, fir, or spruce. Pretty much any wood will work fine. The only problem with having it outside is that the wood will warp, split, and rot with all the weather outside. Also the grain will raise when it's wet which will make it a hair easier. Don't even think about putting a finish on the rungs unless you want to make it practically impossible. Even if you cover it with a tarp or something it will still experience the extremes of temperature and humidity that will damage your board. Definately try to find a place inside.
The rungs aren't hard to make if you have the right tools. The info on the Metolius site is pretty good. I could give you some more help if you had other questions.
If you really think you need to build it outside then the best outside wood I can think of for the application would be Teak, Not gonna lie, hard to work with, not gonna find it at the local hardware store, and I don't think they make plywood out of Teak.

They do make marine plywood - that is far more weather resistant than normal stuff.

A few ideas to add to what J said...
I've eyed manufactured decking material as a source, but it is not much cheaper than teak. Also, you can do a good marine sealant and then eff up the surface to create some friction to hold on to. Of course whatever you do to get the friction is likely to cause other ptoblems, but it is outdoors.

regarding protecting it. mines on the side of our house. i put a quick roof over it. only took an hour or so to knock up and just need a length or 2 of 4x2 and a sheet or 2 of scrap roofing sheets. i can upload some photos if youd like

yeah just get the nicros rungs, they're not as nice but they will hold up way better outdoors

cedar is good wood. & resists elements better than fur or standard 2x4 material.
