I am constantly being refered to and thought of as a person that hikes up steep hills, by non climbers...

Some people even think (When I tell them it's with a rope) that we hike up steep hills with ropes tied around our waists...

And for some reason people still don't get it when you say VERTICAL rock.

The other day I told this old guy that I climb.. he says.. Yeah I used to climb too when I was young, on the farm, it buggered up my knees, you should watch out for you knees...
Yes sir, I'll be sure to do that

I see your point. People seem to think that we climb the rope. Do people actually climb ropes

people climb the rope when you second an aid climb. However reflect back to those people that dont understand the sport on what actually how you do it and they might have a better understanding of the sport of "climbing". John

i think its really irritating. i will be looking at a climbing mag and someone will say something dumb like " stupid mountain climbers" and you try to explain to them that its not mountain climbing and they say " so its like humping a rock? hahahah"

because people here about us and are jealous because our sport is more extreme then theirs??? i dunno...you do climb with ropes in alpine though, and it's not vertical, i think that's what they get confused with.

I get that all the time, but usually if I say that it's not hiking up a mountain, it's climbing a cliff (it's too hard to explain bouldering to some of these people, they just don't see the point) then they usually get it.

But my dad still thinks I'm referring to long, steep hikes, and he's seen me climb. He told me yesturday that if we went on a family vaccation out west this coming summer that he would take me climbing. He has never gotten involved with it before so I was really shocked to hear this. Turns out, he meant we could hike up a few canyons or something, but no actual climbing.

To me, it's the complete opposite!

When I hike up a steep mountain and tell someone i climbed it, people tend to imagine me in a vertical wall...

I showed my dad the photos from my last trip to the Pirinees to climb the Aneto (steep, steep, steep, with a litlle scarmbling...). At the beggining of the album there were some pics of me climbing (sports):

"So, this was the day you went up the mountain?"
"Yes dad, I walked across the glaciar and the snow in shorts and with my tiny climbing shoes with no socks... and look! no water, food or anything! Who's the man, hey?"

Oh! About bouldering! When i started climbing, my climbing instructor told me about bouldering. He said that it was climbing small but extremely hard rocks with mats beneath, and that it was done vey quickly... So i thought it was something like those crazy extreme sports to be seen on tv, on extreme sports competitions. I imagined a huge boulder, vertical, with huge inflated mats beneath, lots of banners, anda bunch of guys 8on at a time ) running towards the boulder and trying to jump/run to the top of it... he, he!

I think the lay community thinks mountain climbing when you say rock climbing. And mountaineers conjure up images of Everest and K2 assents. Where a bunch of guys kinda get in a line and walk. Or so the media would have you believe. The real problem is all the footage they show, is guys walking up hills. As oppose to ripped sports climber levitating up shear granite walls.

Another thing that stupid non-climbers think: that free climbing = what we climbers know of as free soloing.

People often think the other way too. How often have you had a person tell you they climbed such and such peak when you know darn well it's just a hike?

I think the best one I've ever heard was from a co-worker:
"So did you go climbing this weekend?"
"Yes...had a great time"
"How many miles did you climb?"

And he was serious when he asked this!!!
I had to remind him I was climbing walls, not hiking hills.

Yes it is true with bouldering too, I once took some guys to the campus bouldering wall, the one guy asked, "So when are they going to set it up??" He thought the bouldering wall was a very high wall lying on it's side. Then after I expalined that you only do a sequence of moves he said "But you don't go anywhere"

I find people that do know that you don't hike also think that climbers climb the most easiest way up...

hehehe. this post made me laugh. These are the responses I have gotten to the following:
bouldering-"why?"
climbing-"oh yes i have climbed before. i climbed a mountain once." oh you mean you hiked it? "no, I went all the way to the top!" um...okay.
rock climbing-"how do you get up the rocks using such a thin cable?"
gym climbing-"??????"
wall climbing-"oh like spiderman?"
hehehehe. It's all good though. =)

I thought the 5. part of the rating was indication on how extreme the hiking is...starting with 1st class being a flat trail, 2nd steeper incline, 3rd class rock scramble, and then 4th class being a scramble or climb that you may want a rope for..and 5th class hiking being climbing, as we know it...
buncha extreme hikers....

HIKE ON!

I get the exact oppisite...when I tell people I climb they think I am this hard core extremist (i like to think I am hehe) They KNOW it's verticle but they think I am free climbing or something, I have to let them know that it is with a rope and harness. They still all think I'm crazy.

on a monday I always get "SO, what death defying stunt did you pull this weekend"

I'M HARD CORE
