Hey all...I'm finally getting settled here and was wondering if there is a gym in the area since we seem to lack hills to climb on? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well there is the Climbing Wall @ James Island County Park, which has a 50 foot climbing tower with 14 top ropes, two of which are bolted. There is also a bouldering cave and portable wall with auto belays. Check it out at ccprc.com or give them a call at 843-406-2003.

So where would the closest indoor spot be then? I've got a friend who climbs the wall on James Island...he says it's good...idk...I've never really been big into climbing gyms...course where I cut my climbing teeth there was climbing with in 15 min any direction I could drive.

well Half Moon has a Small bouldering wall. But the closest true indoor gym is Stonghold in Columbia.

Curious what your opinion is of the Strom Thurmond gym on the campus. I am trying to find indoor gyms and would like anybody's opinion of both these places for a noob. I live in Aiken, The coast is a bit far to travel to regularly.

Thanks,
Dachia

;-) Agreed, I figured that from your previous post, just curious about the other place since there are only the two places listed in the whole area... I will check out the stronghold one too...

There is a small corner wall at the Goose Creek Community Center. Two autobelays, natural-features textured wall and they're only open I believe weekdays from 4-7pm. Better than nothing if you need a gym fix.

Also, if you have access to the Charleston Air Force Base or have a friend that does, there is a nice wall at the Outdoor Rec Center. 8 auto-belays, boulder problems on the short sections, vertical to overhanging natural features wall. Open 9-4 weekdays. Sucks that it isn't open to the general public but IMO, best indoor wall in the area.

And finally, another wall that may or may not be military-only is the one at the Outdoor Adventure Center on the Naval Weapons Station. It's in the public area on the same road as Subway, and it's the same kind of wall as these other two. I wouldn't make a special trip across town for it though--it's about half the size of the Goose Creek wall and isn't well-maintained since they get about 3-4 people a week climbing on it.
