.....(dramatic music)...a climber and their partner are half way to the lost crag a teadious one mile hike through difficult terrain when the belay bitch realized he forgot his atc in the rusted out volkswagon fox station wagon.." I'll run back to the car, you take the ropes and I'll meet you at the base in 40 minutes"..in disgust the partner whines "oh c'mon I'm totally jazzed to climb"... " I'll be right there" the bitch exclaimed turning and ran full bolt towards the car. The partner trudges on toward the crag, when he arrives, he's in awe, not a single bolt, no graffiti, not even the usual ciggarette butt, realizing that no one has ever been here, he quickly sets up a top rope with the proper three equilized anchors, adjustls the rope, hikes back down the hundred foot path to the base, "oh, darn it I can't wait. Jo Jo would _hit if he got here and I've already redpointed" he thought. Having read something out of the ordinary on the climbing site about soloing with ascenders he cied out.." Tibloc Man, if only I had you here to show me how to set up your system..."

Tune in next week to see if our hero responds...untill then don't beleieve everything you read on line. (climactic music)

A alternate ending to Bonesz' story -

...hmmm, I read how to set up a Tibloc self-belay system on RC.com. I'll just slide this little itty-bitty thing on there and go for it. About half-way up he starts to sketch, and barn-doors. He pulls it together, regains his composure and continues upward. As he pulls his face up to a small ledge, a snake is waiting to look him eye-to-eye. He freaks and takes a fall... (slow to bullet-time photography) his Tibloc takes hold and begins to shred the sheath of his rope. This clogs the little itty-bitty teeth on his Tib. The teeth on his $16.00 life-saver lose their bite. He falls through the air and craters. Big time. He's lucky, or unlucky, depending on how you look at it. He lives but is a veggie. His family (living in the litigious society that we do) decides to sue Socal, RC.com, Socal's dog, etc.

C'mon, dude - just because the sheath shreds a bit doesn't mean you have any worries.

Just Ask Joe Ivy.

Since i recently broke my leg and don't want to fall on my ankle while bouldering i am going to do a self belay toprope. I will solo up put the rope through an anchor and loop it back down. One end of the rope will be anchored at the bottom. The other end will be weighted down. I'll then clip in my ascender and be able to climb without risking my ankles, how does that sound?

i'm not gonna do it i just wanted to ask him some questions... although i think people were seriously overreacting about the potential dangers of climbing w/o a partner. if i had to ascend a rope for any reason i would certainly do it more dangerously than he described, but i imagine that would only be in an emergency. obviously this guy's not here i don't htink anyone else should respond or this thread could be locked. thanks!

The basic and handled ascenders by petzl ARE rated to be used as TOPROPE solo devices. And they work quite well....the Tibloc is NOT!

If you mean SoCal climber, I actually ran into him in a parking lot in Red Rocks some weeks ago.

He was, indeed, heading out to lead some sport with his tibloc at that very moment.

Didn't see him again, but didn't hear of any dead climber-tibloc-solo-whatever leaders in the following weeks.
