I am building a bachar ladder to go from the top of my garage roof and extend over my back yard. I have the bottom anchor ( basically a bomber stake) but I dont know the best way to anchor it to my roof and would appreciate any suggestions if you have done something similar....is something like a bolt and biner the best option?...will that hold on my roof? edit...I guess I am looking or the best type of bolt. (not a debate on the useful/lessness of a bachar ladder please)

I would take what ever money you were going to spend on it and buy a hangboard or any number of more useful things.

you can get Eye bolts in numerous lengths and diameters. depending on where youre anchor point to the roof will be, will dictate what kind of anchor to use. if you are going to anchor to the facia boards (which could be a bad idea depending on who built the house) a couple eye bolts one each side of the peak, and some cable and a steel screw link would be fine. if going through the roof, i would get an eye bolt long enought to go through the roofing, and the rafter, with a nut and washer on the bottom side of the rafter. screw in have a tendancy to loosen over time. and a little roof tar around the bolt. or if you go through the side of the house, do the same thing, just maybe add a 2x4 to inside 34" long to support the weight. good luck

perfect, this is exactly what I was looking for. I plan on going all the way through the roof if I can. I appreciate it.

maybe even a 50" 2x4 spanning 3 trusses to distribute the load even better would help out. not that its going to create that much stress on the one truss, but it wouldnt hurt. and the price of an eye bolt 1.5" longer, and a section of 2x4 would be well worth the price, especially if for some reason something were to go wrong, it beats the repair costs! it actually gives me a great idea as to training too, cuz i dont get out near enough at all, and it would be something different to do, and i need to use my old rope for more than just lookin good on the wall!

(not a debate on the useful/lessness of a bachar ladder please) Maybe a few of these, equalized, or one on each side of the bachar ladder. http://dependabledepot.com/...ingedroofanchor.aspx Google "roof jacks" and "roof anchors" for more info. If you use a roof anchor make sure you hit solid rafters or truss material below the peak. If you do it properly, its possible to do without causing your roof to leak.

Closer to 100% chance if you don't know anything about construction. And if you knew anything, you probably wouldn't have to ask us here on RC.kn0b. Hope your ladder doesn't wind up causing you hundreds of dollars in water damage...

Just caulk any holes you drill, and don't be shy.
