A gym near myself has a single Trad-Wall setup like this. Some sort of re-enforced holes, designed for nut placement, but it's really a glorified Sport-Climb. There's no looking for placements of anything, and all the slots are the same. Ho-hum... I'll stick with sport-leading in the gym, and leave the trad up to the outdoors.

but what about for those of us that live an 8 hour minimum drive from any real rock, eh? granted nothing beats climbing the real stuff, but it's just out of reach for some of us. i think some kind of artificial trad wall to practice on would be quite nice in my local gym.

Large peices of granite could be drilled and bolted into/onto a gym wal and setup in such a way (like a crack) to take cams or nuts. However, just go outside. Sure its winter and there's snow.. but hey. andrew

Well, it's just pouring here all the time, I don't have a dry treated rope, or any money to buy myself something do able, and I'll climb trad in the rain with a 9mm Acc. cord if I felt like having fun.
