My back pops when I breathe deeply

It's the same sensation as cracking a knuckle. Every so often, when pressure builds up and I take a deep breath, it pops. Has anyone else experienced this? It just started happening a couple of weeks ago.

Unless you've experienced some sort of physical trauma, it's unlikely to be cause for concern. I went through about 8 months of my sternum randomly popping like that. Pretty strange sensation but it went away after some time. Pretty sure it was triggered by a muscular imbalance from climbing overly much at the time.

I figured. There's no pain or anything, just wanted to see if anyone else had any experience with it. I have been climbing a hell of a lot over the last few months so you're probably right about the muscle imbalance.

WHOA man! my girlfriend can pop her sternum. I was convinced she was the only person in the world that can do that.

mine does this too.

MY DOCTOR told me it's okay...it's like pressure building up that's being released. It's normal.

YOUR DOCTOR might tell you different. So, ask your doctor to be sure.

my ribs and sternum crack and pop all the time. It's called costochondritis:

Yours may be something else, though, so go see your doc.

I crack my lower back on a regular basis. Sometimes it will crack if I tighten my abdominal muscles. My sternum pops as well. Pretty much every joint in my body cracks at some point in the year. Probably not a good thing but it doesn't hurt.

Go see a chiropractor. You've probably got a rib out of place.

happens to me all the time, especially if i've been sitting for a while (namely long car trips and long lectures).

i never bothered to see anybody about it, never causes me any pain or discomfort. but what do i know...

PS- i could be wrong about this, but i would guess its NOT costochondritis. my understanding about costochondritis is that its an actual inflammation of the costosternal joints (ie in the sternum not the back). and since its inflammation pain not popping is the primary symptom. my understanding is that painless (and SWELLING should be interpreted as a "pain equivalent") cracking of joints is NOT due to inflammation. but most of this is not 1st hand knowledge about costochrondritis but rather applied knowledge of musculoskeletal symptoms generally...

If it doesn't hurt, then you don't have "a rib out of place", or anything else that is likely to benefit from chiropractic or any other treatment.

The noise is probably coming from one of your costovertebral joints, where the ribs articulate with the spine.

Joints crack. Nobody treats cracking joints. There is no pathology here.

Chiropractors make joints crack, and charge you for it. You can do it yourself, in this case, for free.

Disclaimer: I have no doubt that chiropractors get some people better. NO ONE gets everybody better. There is no treatment for cracking joints, nor is one needed.

I woke up this morning with acute pain in my sternum. Guess I'll go see a doctor next week.
