So my woodie is underway and should be done in the next few days. I'm sorta wondering about the padding tho...

I was thinking of calling a foam factory and seeing if that would give me scrap foam for free, then I could just make a big bag and pile it so it's like 3 feet thick.

I was also thinking of just getting open cell foam that is 1 foot thick and putting 2 in. of closed cell foam over top.

My floor is 9 feet by 12 feet... And the above would probably be pretty expensive.

The Dirty Old Matress would work at the base of the overhangs, but it's 12 feet high at the peak so i'm gonna want somthing a little better.

Any comments/other ideas?

From what I know ,I would have paid almost three times more for the foam then ,I paid for the wall itself! My wall is 8-10 ft. at 50 degrees and the roof is 8-8 ft. at 10 degrees. So what I did is,just got a few bolt hangers and bolt it through a 2 by 6 which rest behind the studs.Sorry I didn't help you out more.If you find something besides the hangers like a good deal on foam or what not , let me know
Thanks,
Jeremy

The closed cell foam is the expensive stuff. I would go get the scrap from the foam place (try an upholstery foam company, they are usually pretty cheap anyway) and then put that over or under the mattress you go buy from the thrift store for about $10.00.

granted, i don't have a woodie, but i have seen 2. one person (poor :-( used and old mattress, a chunk of foam, a futon bed, and a few old crash pads. the other had about 4 giant gym size crash pads (rich).

Go to a thrift shop, get two sheets and sew them together leaving one end open. Add velcro to the open end. Then go dumpster diving or ask for foam scraps at a upholstery shop.

This is not the cheapest option out there, but my friend went to a discount furniture store and bought a futon mattress for $55 that was 6 inches thick. The one advantage that this has to a regular mattress is that on some regular mattresses you can still hit the ground if you land on your feet (1 out of my 7 does this).

Get an inflatable kiddie pool and fill it with those syrofoam packing peanuts. Another free temporary source of padding- lawn clippings. People leave garbage bags full of them outside on the street in the summer.

Futon matresses work great. My woodie is in the spare bedroom which already had a futon. When it's time to boulder I just drag the mattress across the room and throw an old sheet over to keep the chalk dust off.
