First go at a hand forged ice axe head.

Anyone know anyone who has done this?

Problems? Suggestions? Ideas?

Like I say, this is my first go. I might finish it just for the sake of practice. But I need to start with larger round bar. The handle area needs more steel for strength.

I'm aiming my design towards an Alpine Hammer:

Also, ever heard a story of an ice axe breaking? In what way did it break?

Well, yes heard plenty, but it was the wood handles that broke. Although I'm sure some heads have broken too.

Fun project! I've made some pitons, but your axe is way cooler than my pins.

I made a similar axe head in high school metal shop. It looked good, and worked fine for walking on steep slopes as a cane, but I loaned it once to a guy trying to chip a hole in 3" ice to get water and the pick snapped off right near the shaft.

From your link:

I still have one of these, and used it as one of my two primary tools when I was just starting out. Used it to climb the Black Dike, Repentance, and a ton of other stuff. My knuckles have never been the same.
