Hi everyone,
I am just getting into the sport here in New Zealand and I am trying to find out which boots to buy. I have narrowed down my list to a few of the usual suspects plus a few new ones. I would greatly appreciate any input as we have limited brands down here and I need to order from America. I will be using the boots for snow hiking with crampons and a bit of walking on volcanic rock.

Mammut Monolith Gore-Tex
Asolo Lothar Gore-Tex
Kayland Women's MXT
Kayland Women's Apex Dual Mountaineering

Also any suggestions on ice axe length? I am 5'4 (164cms)

For an ice ax you will want one in the 50-55 cm length
best way to measure is to hold the ax in you hand by the head. The bottom the the ax should be with in a cm +/- of the ground

I was going to get the boots first and then match them. It was suggested I approach it that way. Are there any brands better than others for general mountaineering or anything I should avoid?

Whoa, maybe in 1980! ;-) You want the spike about 8 inches off the ground when holding it by the head at your side.
I'm 6' 3" and my primary glacier axe is 65cm. I'd guess Caniwi wouldn't want anything longer than 50cm.

Well that list of boot is great start.
how ever depending on your feet and fit I really can't tell you which one will be best for you. I would say pick out one that looks good and order it. see if you fits. Just be sure to check the company return policy. Useually foot wear is fine, but I have seen a few places stated that mounteering boots fall under the catagory of climbing and have a no return policy.

Hahahaha, hey me too! Got my very first summit in the summer of '84! Using my Grandfather's big, long, wooden shafted axe! Long enough that it wouldn't even dangle when I held it by my side.

Hi,
I have some second hand Makalu's for sale size 38 in Q town. NZ. Only worn one season, original owner has left Country. message me if you're keen to try them on.
I have found you really need to try the shoes on I wear scarpa mantra's in 37 but the Summits and Mt blancs I have my toe on the end in that size.

Ah cheers thanks. Unfortunately I know the 38 will be too big for me on the Makalus as I have tried them on before. Greatly appreciated though!

No worries.
Scarpa manta's (old style) were on sale at macpac wellington for a while they are not quite as stiff or supportive as makalus. I find them good for summer mountaineering as they are comfy but I prefer a stiffer sole and warmer boot for iceclimbing.
If you have a small foot you will be limited on what is available to try on here unfortunately
