Travelling from Australia and need info on best way to get to HP 40 from LA? Willing to fly from LA to closest airport and hire car. What would be the best way to go? Any info would be great. Cheers

The closest major airport would probably be Birmingham, Alabama. Huntsville, Alabama would be the next closest and Chattanooga, Tennessee would come in third. The drive from these locations would range from about 30 minutes to an hour or so. If you set up camp in Chattanooga and rent a car you could also make the 20 minute drive north to LRC.

SE Climber hit the nail on the head. I would also recommend setting up camp in Chattanooga. HP40 is about an hour away, Little Rock City (Stone Fort) is twenty minutes away, and Rocktown is about 45 minutes away. You'll have the chance to really check out southern sandstone bouldering at its finest. Plus, Chattanooga is a cool city with lots to do on rest days.

If you do come to Chattanooga, I would recommend the Crash Pad for accommodations. Given the name, they are obviously oriented toward climbers and other outdoorsy types. Plus they offer boulding pad rentals, so you wouldn't have to haul yours from Australia.

One comment to make - the guidebooks from Greener Grass publishing are the bomb for both those areas. In addition to topos, they have interviews with the folks that established the area, and discussions on 5star lines, etc.

I might be around in late March/early April.

As far as the guidebooks, there's a couple of small Southeast outfitters selling them.
Rock/Creek is based in Chattanooga. They've got Stone Fort http://www.rockcreek.com/...uestion=stone%20fort and Horse Pens 40 http://www.rockcreek.com/...uestion=horse%20pens.

Waterstone Outdoors also has them http://store.waterstoneoutdoors.com/ProdList.asp?scat=1.

Shipping is probably steep, though.

There's some pretty decent summaries of the areas over at Mountain Project if you want to wait to get the books until you get here, but want a preview of the areas.

Flying to ATL and renting a car there would probably be much more economical. HP40 is maybe 2.5 hours drive from Atlanta, and getting from there to LRC/Rocktown and back to Atlanta is super easy.

I disagree. Depending on when booked and what days the flights are for (of course), regional flights aren't that expensive. I've flow into Chattanooga from Europe and the additional cost as opposed to Atlanta was only $30--well worth not having to deal with getting out of the Atlanta airport or Atlanta traffic.
