All the other considerations aside, do you think Phoenix is a good place to relocate to for a recreational climber? Would St. George, Las Vegas, Southern CA or somewhere else be better?

The correct answer is (e) somewhere else. All those places are HOT. Nothing takes the fun out of climbing faster than HOT! Also Phoenix, Vegas, SoCal and yes maybe even St George at too big of urban smears. But, if you must go... they all have climbing and occasionally its not TOO HOT.

Of the three, i would go with Las Vegas personally. While Red Rock is pretty hot in Summer and Early fall, it pleasant in Late Fall, sunny winter days, and spring. Easy tor each for evening climbing year-round after the sun settle.
Vegas also gice you access to Mount Charleston and some of Utah for easy trips that aren't to far.

I don't know much about the other options you listed, but Phoenix is HUGE. It will take you at least an hour to cross the city and then at least another hour to get to any climbing areas, this is a no go in my book. In AZ I think Tuscan or Flagstaff are much better options.

Believe it or not, the answer depends on the type of climbing you like to do and the difficulty level you're interested in pursuing. Perhaps if you provided this information you'd have a chance of receiving useful help.

Here in so Cal we climb in the mountains during the summer, idlewild and BigBear have incredible climbing, and Joshua tree in the winter. Can't go wrong with that selection!

Not to thread jack, but for year round climbing, where do you guys suggest? Multipitch, trad, and a bit of sport.

Vegas!
I may be a little partial ;)
It is never too hot to climb here, you just need to go to the right places in the summer time. The right places are more useful on week days though because it can get crowded on weekends. If you are really tempermental about your temperature you can always head up to Charleston for pleasant weathered limestone climbing.
We are also a perfect central location to so many awesome national parks and recreation areas.

That makes so much sense, I should have thought of that. The thread jack sort of took care of it though - Trad, multi pitch. I'm preparing to get back on El Capitan after a sabbatical of a few years. Once I've done The Nose I think I can probably be happier to "age" gracefully.

Oh, and the grade. I'm working back up to on-site around 11a trad. Who cares what I lead sport - it's just training although I do love to lug limestone once in a while.

Piggybacking on this thread - I am looking at moving somewhere for the summer/fall to really start climbing. I've worked outdoors on snow the last 9 winters and been training a bit this spring to get ready for my first climbing season.
Tucson, Vegas, and Chattenooga are my top 3 choices. My priorities are
1- Cheap rent
2- Jobs (restaurant work most likely)
3- Easy/moderate sport climbing
4- University or bigger (100k+ population)

Of your 3 tops I'd go with Chattanooga. Although, the Tennessee Wall isn't that much a sport cliff, compared to the New or the Red. But the weather is a nice seasonal mix and there is plenty of grass and trees compared to Vegas or Tucson. Plus a big f---ing river to swim in too.
