i see and read about alot of people taking headlamps on their backpacking and climbing trips. i have yet to buy one, waiting for a good review from a magazine and it doesnt look like it is going to happen. i have heard that the Petzl Tikka is really good. any other suggestions?

I love my Tikka- I have the old style with the big elastic headband, which is fine, but the newer ones with the super thin retractable headband are really cool. They are small, light, and the batteries last for ever in those things (I think they say 40hours!)! 'Course, it isnt as bright as a big halogen or anything, but unless you are mountain biking at night or something like that I cant think that it matters. I usually just end up using my headlamp for cooking and reading- dont need a bigger light for either. Take care!

If you're going to be climbing with a head lamp on, you'll probably want one with a strap for around your head, and over your head.
The Petzl zoom is a good lamp, and also the BD lamps look good.
If you're just bumming around the camp, the old school Tikka is awesome! The zipka{new tikka} is a good lamp, but it doens't seem like it'd be as comfortable.

The petzl megabelt is one of the best from what reviews I've read. 25 hours with 3 C batteries and a regular bulb or 6 hours with a halogen. I've even heard of a dentist using it at work

I use a Petzl Micro. It's a nice lightweight unit, and I can throw a halogen bulb in if I need more light.
I have several friends who have the Tikka and they all love it.
What will you be using yours for? Some are better for certain uses than others.

Iuse a petzl zoom as well. It is great except it doesn't last as long as I would like. Carrying those extras batteries and then having to change them in the dark was a pain. I got a LED bulb for it and so far it has lasted twice as long as it normally would have and it is still going strong. The bulb was like 20 bucks but I think it was worth it. If you have a zoom already then you might want to check into it before dropping the coin on a new unit.

The cool thing about Tikas is that their so damn lightweight and streamlined! There is nothing to get in the way, such as a separate battery pack. Simple=Good.
Have you ever tried climbing a well known climb in the pitch dark, however? It's an experience to remember.

I have the Black Diamond LED lamp the Moonlight. I have had a bunch of headlamps over the years, and this has been my favorite so far.

I love my Tikka, the only downside to it is that once the LED's wear out you have to throw the whole thing out and buy a new one because you can't relace the LED's.

I like the Princeton Tec Matrix. It uses an led module that is easy to replace and burns forever. It is also very durable, and has more impact protection than the BD moonlight.

I have used my PETZL head lamp for 4 years and no problem... is worth the price tag...
also fits very nicely over my PETZL helmet...
