... had to stop climbing for a few months ... then went back to a moderately difficult but familiar route, quarter way up, realized I've lost the confidence at finding holds, placing pros etc. how long do you need to get your confidence back? Depends on how long you were out and why (and I'm sure it varies by the individual). I've had two very long breaks due to injuries. It took about six months to fully get my confidence back. If you are having confindance problems, my suggestion is to climb extremely easy routes (5.8, 5.4, whatever) until you can climb them totally relaxed and without worry. Then work up from there. I think this is the fastest approach.

just start easy and work up to harder routes and you will feel more comfortable.

Climb as many routes that you can whenever you go out climbing. Make sure the routes are easy enough for you to feel comfortable with the movement, placing gear, etc.

yeah my first trad shook my confidence and i have only done one trad since, i have to do more it is fun but scary!
