I am just wondering if it ever happent to someone else... We were climbing at the local crag, and i was trying a route quite hard for me. So after a some falls I asked my belayer to lower me. When down I untied my harness, went for a piss and then i just put the sticker in position... After a while I went for that route again but I forgot to tie my harness. I took a fall 3 metres above the ground and the harness opened but I wasnt injured because I didnt actually slipped out of it. I thought it was really stupid of me but some months later the same thing happent to a friend. Just before the crux of a route his girlfriend who was belaying him noticed that she hadn't double tied the harness! the reason was the same. I thing these stickers can give you serious trouble as they can create the feeling that the harness is tied up. Fromt that day I made a habit to ask my belayer if the harness is tied up just the same way we use the "i climb-climb on" thing

You are an Idiot!! IT is partially your fault and partially your belayers fault. Always Double check each other.

VP, Hopefully this will always be in the back of your mind from now on and you won't let this happen again. As long as you learn from a mistake, that's what counts.

How the hell do you tie a wrong figure eight...I cant even think how you could screw that up! Regardless which way you trace it ( coming back left or right) it still is properely tied. And if you cant tie the first 8 you shouldn't be climbing unsupervised. I'm not mad or trying to offend anyone but sometimes people dont realize how dangerous climbing can be. and preventable mistakes can have huge outcomes. I am glad you are alright, and I hope you realize how lucky you are.

The moral of the story…ALWAYS DOUBLE-CHECK no matter how much experience you have! I have a friend with over twelve years under his belt and he STILL gets me to double check his harness and knots.

Although that is a very serious mistake to make... I think you need to ease up a bit mustclimb. The climber came on here to tell others of his mistake so that it wont happen to you or me, not to be put down. I hope mustclimbs comments wont discourage anyone from making forums.

Back in 89 Lynn Hill almost killed herself on an easy warm up sport route because she forgot to tie her knot- the rope was just stuck in her harness. When she leaned back to lower at the end of the climb, she fell 70 feet to the ground. Even experts make dumb mistakes.

I've made mistakes but none nearly as bad as not tieing my harness or knot properly. Poor Lynn Hill. She seems to get mentioned on every post about making a mistake. No one used to mention her until her book came out. Dave

I make it a point to never leave something partly completed. It's easy for someone to interupt you while you do up you harness and you forget about it. So I make sure it is completely done up, or completely undone. Same goes for knots, if I have to stop in the middle, I'll undo it all first. I'm extra careful, because I feel sometimes I am extra forgetful.

I've read several stories about that exact thing, so I double check my harness, even when I'm absolutely sure it's strapped right. It would be easy to undo the buckle for some reason, and totally forget about it. After reading stories like this, I always check just before every climb.
