When do you usually get your REI dividend? Every year it seems to come later and later (that may be just because I anticipate it for so long). Whenever I call or email them they never seem to know when I'll get it, and I want it now (stomp stomp)!

I checked their website and found out that they come in "late Februrary". I'll be getting a nice chunk of change. I recently started climbing and I bought virtually everything at REI. I'm not sure what I'll do with it yet, but it will be fun wandering around the store getting ideas!

Tehe... you too , huh? Unfortunatley for us...we got more snobby about gear last year when we were replacing old stuff with light weight gear for backpacking and we bought most climbing stuff elsewhere as well...but we'll still get a little bit...probably buy more guide books and maps. But I'm here for anyone that needs help spending theirs!

Bad thing is last few times I went to REI in College Park MD they have had a very poor climbing section. It almost looks like they are trying to get rid of it. I still buy a lot of camping stuff their so I should be able to spend mine.

yeah, I pretty much use all of mine shopping rei.com instead of the actual store, which takes some of the fun away, but at least it always has what I want. I should have a good dividend. My parents went all out on a canoe trip at the boundary waters, and they got all the nicest gear, but didn't have their own rei card, so they put it all on mine, yipee!!

Dividends have come out in Feb for as long as I can remember. I buy some climbing gear from them if it is on sale and I know exactly what I want. But I enjoy going to the specialty climbing shops because usually the folks there are climbers themselves. Folks in SLC, UT where I visit quite often, have it both ways. There is a BD outlet store there and a few miles away is REI and a climbing specialty store "IME" next door. You folks in SLC are so lucky!!

I know they're "supposed"to come in Febuary, but I swear they never do. I think supporting specialty shops is great, but reioutlet has great prices, and in southwest michigan, great specialty climbing shops aren't exactly abundant.

mowz: At REI, if you are a member (small fee) you buy stuff and every year you get a "dividend." The dividend consists of 8-10% of the retail purchases (not on sale) that you have made there over the year.

Mowz, when you become an REI member (it's free) then whenever you buy something at REI and you use your member ID card, you get 10% of the amount you spent during the year given back to you at the end of the year to spend at REI (or you can wait until July of the next year and get a check back, but it's much more fun to have money that you just "have" to spend on climbing gear).

Are you all aware of the REI Visa? For every dollar you spend, you get .01 added to your dividend. Doesn't sound like much, but it adds up. I've already earned about 15 bucks toward my REI dividend this year, and I haven't bought anything at REI. Pay your tuition with it, etc. and you can rack up some serious money to buy gear with come February (or March or whatever).

I called REI last week. (God-they must love climbers: hopelessly addicted and hopelessly broke. We must harass them more than any other group) I was told mid to late February.

Wow, REI is overpriced. Thanks for the info reborne. Its lucky for us that we have someone around that can tell us where to buy our gear.

Besides the 8-10 percent rebate back to members and the additional 1 percent if you open an REI Visa that comes from other than REI purchases....members also get the following bennies: 1/2 price on rental gear at the stores(winter and summer stuff...every store has different selections but as a member you can reserve in advance before you go somewhere) discounts on bike and ski repairs and tuneups and best of all....the used gear sales that some of the stores have.....even better than REI Outlet....because you can pick over the stuff and see what's what before you buy...and sometimes the discounts are as much as 50-60 percent off. I've been a member since early 70s....and now I work there parttime....funsville!!!!

I was just there today (2/12) and they told me it should be in the computer by Fri. Also you will be given a 10% off coupon that you can use on any full price item along with your dividend (the store has them if you don't want to wait for it to come in the mail).

I'm with fan & scarecrow...I only shop at the local climbing shops like Outland, Real Cheap Sports, A-16. I can't stand going to those big impersonal sporting good stores with little teeny climbing sections. It's nice to go into a climbing store where everyone knows you, knows what gear you have and don't have already, what your next trips are gonna be. I went to the REI in Manhattan Beach once and was so not impressed. Everything was kinda expensive and selection too random.

Actually, you pay MRSP for everything at REI, so if you call what they recommend as the REGULAR price as overpriced (noting that for some unfortunate souls without credit cards, this is the only way to do it), then yes, we get screwed. Stupid. -As a point of order, I have neither a credit card nor the need for one. So piss off, will you?
