Cam hooks seem really damn stable. But sky hooks and the like seem to be otherwise. Today I think I was stepping up on a logan hook, and for just a moment, the hook was unweighted... and it popped off the ledge, leading to a phatty phall onto a solid stopper. So what's the secret to using these types of hooks in a stable manner? I guess I'll have to play with hooks some on toprope...

any hook could pop off when you unweight it. you must hold it in place or keep a little weight on it to keep it from moving.

Yeah, that makes sense, but it just didn't seem possible to unweight the hook. I was weighting the hook entirely with my left as I moved up a step in my right aider, and then when I shifted my weight to my right foot (the right aider weighting the hook), it popped.
I must have had some mini hop in there or something.

You also could have changed the direction of pull. When you switched from left to right the "way" you weighted the hook may have changed just enough to cause it to pop.

Here is your Dr. Piton Big Wall Tip of the Day:

When moving around on hooks [weighting and unweighting them], place your finger on the hook.

After you're on it and in position to make your next move, then you can take your finger off the hook and figure out what you're going to do next.

That would have to be one of the shortest messages I have seen from PTPP

Just as PTPP says: them darn things FLEX when you weight them, and if you step off quickly, they jump like frogs. And like frogs, they will move when you leave them alone long enough that they think they can get away with it.

I'm TOTALLY surprised he didn't mention duct-tape. That can even turn a hook into decent pro (relatively speaking). Just make sure your cleaner has pockets, to carry the tape all the way to the top and back down.

And PTPP has said this so many times, I'm amazed he didn't mention it: DON'T LOOK AT IT! Once you place it, and gingerly apply two pounds to set it, look down and away as you stand up on it. Let your helmet figure out what went wrong if it pops. Otherwise, your teeth, eyes, or worse can get hooked. Same with heads, tied-off pins and other things you shouldn't be trying to to stand up on in the first place.
