How does everyone here distinguish between conquering fear and suppressing natural self-preservation devices? Is there a difference to you? And if you don't think there is, do you think it really matters?

In reply to: How does everyone here distinguish between conquering fear and suppressing natural self-preservation devices? Is there a difference to you? And if you don't think there is, do you think it really matters? I don't distinguish. Fear IS a self-preservation device. Doing something inspite of a healthy fear of it IS suppressing a natural self-preservation device. Does it matter? Only to the survivors. DMT

The idea of "conquering" fear is usually counterproductive. I think most effective approaches to this dilemma are both less aggressive and more complex than the concept of "conquest" per se. :?:

Fear is a helpful tool for knowing when you are in over your head. When to proceed and when to back off. But as John Long said, you have to know when it's rational or irrational fear. Rational fear may be backing off the 5.11c X route you thought you could lead. Irrational fear is backing off the 5.11c grid bolted route at Rumney...

YOU have to trust your gear! Know your limits but also push your self. Fear is what keeps you alive.
