Hi yall, I was just wondering what everyones favorite videos are. I really like masters of stone probably because of the great valley footage. Can anyone sugest any others with good/highenergy crack footage. I like the bouldering vids but I shure love crack action. peace, Josh

I've heard "Front Range Freaks" is pretty good as far as climbing vids go.

Leo Dickinson's 1981 "Eiger Solo" documentary of the first English solo of the 1938 line is pretty excellent. Eric Jones is the climber. His narration is very understated and heartfelt, quite unlike some of the narration I've heard in other films about climbing. Jones I hear is a really cool guy. He's got a cafe in Snowdonia in England. If you are overdue and on a route facing the cafe, he'll get this huge spotlight out and shine it up at your route. They also show some decent reenactments of some of the Eiger tragedies like Tony Kurz, Hinterstoisser, Angerer, Rainer and John Harlin. You can get it from amazon.com, which I was pretty surprised to see.

If you havent seen it, you have to see UNCOMMON GROUND by Rob Frost (no relation). His company is Second Chance Films. He only has one out now that is mainly New England climbing, but he has another one coming out this late summer that goes to europe. I have seen some sneek peeks and its gonna be as good if not better than the first. The first one featured some local boys and was cool. Give it a looksee. And if you dont like it, you can yell at me.

Southern Slopers is a strong film about strong climbing in a strong area of the world known mostly for rednects, humidity, incest and outhouses. I give it 5 stars.

:D Hands down Uncommon Ground is the best climbing video i've seen. I have fallen in love with New England even more now that i've seen all of the cool climbing places and all of the potential the entire region has. The music rocks too. Modernized Bluegrass Ruler!!! :)

Masters of Stone is horrendous. I can't remember which version I saw, I think it was 4, but it was horrible. Bad soundtrack, too much lycra, Dan Osman (whom I respected, not as much now) free soloing a flowing waterfall with ice gear, Steve Gerberding (sp) aid climbing, Ron Kauk grabbing the anchors at the end of a 5.13, and so on. Avoid this video. Watch something a bit more dignified. Masters of Stone takes cool climbing feats, videotapes them, and basically takes a dump on them. I believe it is hard to beat Rampage and Free Hueco. Hard Grit is cool too, although a bit less well done. Frequent Flyers is sweet as well.

Isn't Dosage the video where Randy Leavitt is leading this huge arcing crack for about ten minutes and finally gets to the top practically pumped out of his mind? His buddies then start delivering what they consider helpful encouragement, "Come on. You got it. Yeahh...." "Quiet please." That was pretty funny stuff.

His buddies then start delivering what they consider helpful encouragement, "Come on. You got it. Yeahh...." "Quiet please." That was pretty funny stuff. That was actaully Ropegun's "Inertia II". But, you're right, pretty funny. It was also the video where Tyson Atwell was yelling at himself when bouldering V11 (or something).. "Come on Tyson, get the rockclimb!" "Come on.. get the grip." Overall, a decent video. Randy's ascent of Book of Hate is awesome, and most of the bouldering is decent. The rest is.. well, 'ey. Rent it before you buy. I'd like to also recommend "Southern Slopers". Great video of Horse Pens 40. It's amazing.. even more so after you've been there. "Rampage" is pretty good.. but, it gets a bit long. Sharma is amazing. "Try Hard" is alright, but only for the climbing. The video work and music definitely brings down the rest of the video. But man, those guys are strong. Worth a look.. I've never really been inspired by the Master of Stone Video's, but if you can rent it from a friend or gym, then it's worth a look. Umm.. that's all I can think of right now. :?

Most Masters of Stone are alright. I can tell you two videos that you shouldn't waste your time or money on. They are Hard Grit and Front Range Freaks. Anyone who has seen them and at the end of watching them didn't feel like they wasted time in their life when they could have done anything else, they should review their lifes pleasure level. I was embarassed to be watching them when my roommates walked in. It was like being caught watching porn but much much worse. It was not funny embarassin but sad embarassing.

I personally think the Masters of Stone series is bada$$. I remember the first time I saw IV it was on the bus ride home from caving in Puerto Rico. I will never forget Dan Osoman's four minute free solo and even though some of the music is bunk, It never fails to get me stoked.

NASKARMA blow!!! It shows a bunch of really cool climbing, but the filming is horrible. For better footage of the Southeast, buy Witness This. Dosage is great footage (like every other Josh Lowell film). If you are into seeing the problems and routes that you have always heard about, done by big-name climbers that you have heard of...see this. The only thing that sucks about it is that after watching it, you dont want to climb anything except for overhanging boulder problems and sport routes. Friction Addiction is crap. Lots of uninspiring bouldering and route climbing. The climbers dont seem to enjoy themelves at all and John Gill doesent really say anything interesting. The art of leading by John Long is funny as hell. There is lots of cool climbing (around J-tree mostly) but the scenes where John Long talks and acts are worth the money in themselves. Long wears a different sweater (Mr Rogers style, in the desert) in every scene. Definately see this one before Friction Addiction or Naskarma. West Coast pimp is also good, but I dont really have anything to say about it...
