It seems like almost every time I climb i get a killer cramp in legs or feet. Does anyone else get these cramps? If so what do you do to remedy them?

I get foot cramps, calf cramps, and the worst is the hip cramp! If I stretch and drink lots of water, they don't happen as much.

to avoid cramps during workout - it is probably a good idea to do some stretching, and make sure the muscles are warmed up. if contracting muscles that are already tight, and not warmed up, you are bound to get some cramps. the following link is for a very informative article about warming up:

http://www.timeoutdoors.com/...4CLMAMR01091301E.htm

one of the comments from this article:
"'Early' injuries are usually due to the body system not being 'ready'. i.e. the muscles are cold, less elastic and more prone to tearing. Warmer tissue is more pliable and elastic, and therefore is less prone to injury."

for cramps after a workout - i think post-workout stretching is important. it pulls the muscle fibres apart, and so the muscle is better prepared for rebuilding. as well, in doing so, you are less likely to get cramps due to tightly contracted muscles. in all the times i've pulled muscles or gotten really bad cramps (calf in the middle of the night is the worst!!! ), it has always been when i have not stretched.

i used to get cramps in my feet. now i stretch my arches by lifting one foot up onto the other knee (for support), and gently pull back on my toes. i do this 2-3 times per foot before climbing, holding for about 15 seconds. this seems to help a lot for my feet.

there are several stretches for calfs, quads, and hamstrings. i try to stretch them once they are warmed up a bit. try to find a reputable source for stretches - there are a lot of wrong ways to do some common stretches.

there is an ongoing debate on whether stretching really helps. i can't say i've done any huge statistical studies, but i can tell you it helps me a lot.

I seem to get most of my cramps in my hips (mainly while stemming gaps)...not exactly the most exhilarating experience! Stretch well before getting on the wall to lessen your cramping likelihood... :)

Hi,

I get cramps on really hot days. I have been told its because of loss of body salts. These can be replaced by eating bananas and having plenty of water.

I dont get cramps but...

Sometimes when I climb I will lift my foot up like as high as I can go and I bend my knee really far and then sometimes when I do it I start to push up and my knee just like gives out and then when I try to push myself up a little with my legs my knee will not go. It is really weird and it hurts like crazy. I ice it when I get home but does anyone else have this problem or know what it might be?

buy some magnesium solluable suplement tablets. magnesium helps in two ways: first it rehydrates your body by providing electrolytes (ions) and is speccifical anti cramp because it acts as a mild muscle relaxant (you dont want to know how it works).

just dond use calcium supplements, because calcium increases muscle tonus, thus leading to more cramps.

Read rockzen's post, it's the most accurate one here.
You are probably getting cramps from muscle fatigue, not low hydration or salt levels.
In western society we rarely have too little salt in our diets - I have actually seen people making themselves VERY sick (hallucinations, vomiting) from consuming too much salt for a fear of getting cramps during exercise.
But also, check with your doctor, there may be other causes for the cramps that go beyond the trivial reasons we come up with here,

It may help if you stretch out and warm up your muscles before you climb, and be sure you are drinking enough water.
