These shoes are freakin AWESOME! They arrived Thursday, FINALLY after what felt like years of waiting. They are GREAT. a little stiff out of the box, but they break in. I was edging on the littliest things imaginable today. The ridged heel works wonders too.. Also good because the heelcup doesn't pull off as the original anasazis. I give them an A for performance. smack ba dap

The Madrock hooker and the five ten anasazi southwest are not the same shoe. Thats like saying why don't you get a pair of Boreal ninjas instead of those pricey five ten moccasyms.

True they are not the same shoe, yet your point is mundane. Having a “pricey” shoe doesn’t automatically make it a great shoe. Above you see someone who has the Madrocks and loves them. Madrocks have the same rubber and the innovators of the hooker heal. it would be foolish to buy the anasazi just because it cost more as it would be foolish to buy the madrocks just because they cost less. They guy is asking for opinion. The madrocks are a great shoe, half the price, same rubber. Go try em on and decide. Period.

Thillseeker is spewing. I have Hooker zips and Southwests and the latter is a much better shoe. The Hooker is okay and a good bargain but it's nothing like the SWs. I'll keep wearing the Madrocks for training and save the SWs for serious climbing.

VERY TRUE. However, the Mad Rock Mugens, ARE practically the same shoe as the Anasazi...go look.

so where is the "spew"?

are you saying you should buy a shoe because it's more expensive?
i don't care if you waste your money so you can do some "serious" kiddie top rope in Disneyland while you look all nice-n-fancy in your "spendy" shoes.
shoes depend on the person.
so go get with your kiddie group and talk your smack, 'cause no one hear buys it.

Well until you've actually climbed in both shoes, you're spewing. And no, the Mugens is not the same either. You are so hung up on price while many of us are more concerned about what actually performs better. The proof is in the wearing, teenybopper.

Go look yourself. The Mugens are one of the softest shoes in existance - and it's the stiffest shoe MadRock makes (except for the Phoenix). The Anasazis are a nice stiff shoe that edges incredibly well. The Mugen doesn't edge for crap in comparison. Madrocks shoes would all be much better if they were much stiffer, at least for the kind of climbing I do - thin vertical faces, edging climbs and trad. I'm sure MadRocks are pretty decent on super steep volcanic and limestone stuff.

The mugens are not much, if any, softer than the anasazi velcros. They fit pretty much the same and climb very similarly.

I've got no experience with the southwest.

I've tried Mad Rocks.. they're OK.. that's it, just OK. the southwests are serious f-ing shoes. I get FiveTen shoes at half price.. the only way it would be worth it to me to not buy FiveTen and to instead climb in Mad Rocks would be if Mad Rock simply gave 'em to me. I swear by Anasazis, no doubt. I climb moderates in a pair of velcros, serious sport in lace-ups, and now for thin face, hard edging, and aggressive heel-hooking, i have the Southwests. If you want to climb HARD, the first step is to build technique, power and endurance, the second step is to climb in Five Ten shoes... but that's just my humble opinion.
peace,
ike

Some good opinions in here guys. Thanks for that, I havn't seen any Mad Rock shoes here in Aus. before/yet, but I will investigate them. I do like the sound of the Southwests though, and it will be a pretty narly shoe that changes my mind on getting those.

p.s. Respect Kermit.

just got the southwest yesterday. very stiff out of the box and not have had allot of time to break in yet, saying that however the three hours that i have climbed in them they are going to be a shoe for vert face climbing they are sized the same as anaszi velcro so sizing should not be a issue if you have or tried a pair of the velcros. as far as the construction i would say that five ten has improved greatly with this shoe much more attention to detail. no more delamation problems. to sum it up if you like the anasazi line and will be climbing face crack climbing (not sensitive enough for bouldering in my opinion) then give the southwest a try. just a hackers two cents

Really? I find the Mugens to be fairly stiff, about on par with the Anasazi Velcros. I'd feel really insecure smearing in my Mugens. Then again, I am pretty light, so lots of shoes feel over-supportive.

Someone ought to give you a pair of Southwests just for getting that Kermit thing for your signature. One of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. 8)

why can't everyone just say that there are tradeoffs for either shoe? I've heard a lot about how mad rock rubber is super-sticky. Well, that's great and all if you don't need to edge a lot or don't mind your shoes wearing out more quickly. The southwest DOES look pretty cool, and I think 5.10 used a lot of ideas that people called "gimmicks" on the mad rocks.
