Every now and then when I am climbing I will move my foot up pretty high to get a hold for my foot and then when I start to push up I just get this shooting pain down my leg that concentrates in my knee and I cant push up at all with my knee for the rest of the day.

I get home and I ice it but there is no swelling from what I can see.

Anyone know what I should do? Try to avoid doing that and just hope it does not get bad?

Hey,

It sounds like what I'm just getting over. If the pain runs along the outside of the leg from the hip joint to the knee, it's your IT Band. The flare up can be very painful. I was actually on crutches for two weeks.

The move that caused it for me was a angle hook around a corner. I was applying to much lateral pressure to hold on and - pop. It didn't hurt at first but after a week the pain really started and over time it got worse.

The remedies that I have found useful are good stretching before I climb and icing at the end of the day. Also, definitely have a massage therapist do some deep tissue work on your leg. It hurts like hell but you'll see a benefit.

I'm going on 12 weeks and almost back to normal. Take it real slow or you could cause some serious damage.

Good luck,
Steve Judge

May be knee ligament related (a notorious injury area for athletes).
