what is your climbing style mine is I use the outside of my feet a lot I layback quite a bit I normally crouch down on to my heel to rest and am smooth moving over shelfs/mantles

I just started thinking about it when watching people do an easyish shelf that comes out about two foot i tend to undercling on it do a heel hook up above and work up with my arms (like campus boarding) till both feet are past it, but my partner does this route just as well but he holds on above and jumps up I've seen others do this in a variety of ways

so whats your style? :?

I like to have one hand grasping a hold 2 feet above my head, then I match my other sides foot and hand on a hold about waist height, and my other leg is fully extended for balance. That is the position that I feel most comfortable in, and I will go out of the way to do that on any type of move (except traverses and severely overhanging routes)

Ugly, slow, scratching and clawing. That should explain it.

Oh! Wait, I forgot grunting and swearing.

I'm being literal here. I use whatever I can. Style is unimportant. As long as I climb, I'm happy.

i put one hand on the rock and then i, like, put my other hand above it and then, you know, smear my feet somwhere and progress upwards. I then either repeat the process or accerate at 9.81m/s downwards till something stops my decent; usually a rope. The rope feels very nice. Crash pads are also very nice too.

I like to wear some baggy pants - loose fitting - yet minimizes knee scrapage. Usually in an earth-tone color is nice. Some sort of t-shirt that sports either skulls or something wicked on it - no columbia gear on me. I wear purple shoes for that extra stylish touch. If it gets too hot, I'll turn my shirt into a head-dress (I'm too lazy to keep track of hats, so I substitute).

I guess my style ain't too snazzy - but I guess that's why I don't go to those dance clubs :)

I use heal hooks a lot and lay back and try to stay balanced.

hmm, i guess it would mostly depend on the route, but my style on roofs is dyno to the closest hold and then campus until i can find a good foot hold, i also use a lot of drop-knees, I'll take a sloper over a crimper any day and use mono's just for fun whenever the opportunity presents it's self.

thats really about it

I make use of monos and hand jams where i can find them, b/c they seem more secure to me than crimpers and slopers. Backsteps, heel hooks, drop knees and knee bars are my friends. Dynos are not. Also I am quite strong with minimal balance, so you'll rarely catch me on a slab. If you do, you'll encounter a fine example of touret's syndrome in action.

I tend to use the outside of my feet when I'm on small holds. I like to get sideways to the rock to get extra reach and I have no problem with odd body positions, although I'm not as limber as I'd like.

I'm tall and I try to avoid things at the limit of my reach just to make the climb a bit more like it is for the shorter (more average) climbers.

Toe cams and finger locks predominantly. Also fist jams, knee jams, arm bars. That sort of thing.

when i'm at the happy boulders, i really like to foot dyno into two-finger pockets but my dream problem would start in an offwidth and go into 2 overhanging fist cracks that I would have to campus. i think that would be the funest.

It sounds like you are describing preferred body positions and techniques while climbing. My preferred technique is flowing with what the route gives me. My preferred style is to take on the largest objective my skill will allow, while using the least amount of gear, and doing so in a single push. Alpine style.

My climbing style can best be summed up with the single word "Sucky." That said I've never stepped away from a rock upset. I have fun every time I touch a rock and I'm happy with that. This is the only "Sport" (that's a WHOLE nother' conversation) that one can suck at, fail the same problem/route 5 times, and still walk away for the day and say "Today was GREAT!"

since no one took the bait I guess I'll be serious...

I try to climb a route as fluid and static as possible. I will look for the small features rather than gun for the big holds. I really like thin face climbs, just because it forces me to be very aware of my foot work.

pushing my limits is cool, but I'm just more interested in having fun at the rock, or on the ice, or even in the mountains.

You will usually find me on crappy rock, 25ft off route, 25ft from my last piece of pro scratching my head with a perplexed look on my face

my style leans more toward the flexibility and balance because for the longest time I didn't have the strenght I needed. But now that I am building up my strenght. . . I notice that it is MUCH easier now!

one of my climbing partners has the pseudonym "Flailing Whale"...so that should just about clear it up for my crew.

flail
v. flailed, flail·ing, flails
To wave or swing vigorously; to thrash

AS IN: "Flailing. Flail on."
