Here is a link to Jodys latest photo efforts. I can tell you that these pics are breathtaking. http://www.supertopo.com/...704&f=0&b=0#msg23706 Link was broken so I have replaced the broken one with one that works.

Hey Jody, Can you further explain: "There was no contrast due to the haze so I put a graduated red filter on the top for a little color and a graduated gray on the bottom to increase the contrast there. I think I took one unfiltered and over the next few days I'll try to get it posted too." Grad. Red filter? I've never seen one, wouldn't it effect your colour balance? And a Grad. grey? How does it increase the contrast?

great again, though I think the first one is a bot too much "artificial". But that's a personal taste. :D

Well, I ain't the photog., but a grad. gray (often called a graduated nuetral density filter) doesn't really increase the contrast. It just makes pulls a bright section of the scene down, so that it is within the given contrast range of the film. Galen Rowell used this technique extensively, and talks about it in his books. The grad. red is probably just a red filter that only covers have of the lense. You can get super nice grad. ND filters from Singh-Ray. They are really something of a PITA to use though, and you have to be willing to spend a lot of time on composition. Also, these are very nice pictures. I though I really would have rathered the red filter was not on that one picture -- that was the first thing that jumped out to me about it. But these are very nice photos. Although I had hoped it would be pictures of same naked female supermodel named jody ...

I know what a Grad. neutral density filter is and what they are used for, but with the talk of increased contrast I wasn't sure if that was what he was talking about or not?

Those are pretty cool photos. I know what you mean about the first one being a little fake, but, it is still pretty cool. Anybody ask Jody exactly what kind of filters he used? I know certain types of gray filters are supposed to increase contrast-at least that is what I have been told.

I did this photo with a graduated nuteral density filter to bring down the bright sky, so as to retain the detail in the shadowed area. It decreases contrast levels to those recordable on film. If I didn't use it, I would have lost detail in the rocks, and been left with black blobs, or to retain detail in the rocks without it, I would have totally lost the sky, and probably part of the moutains in the background. http://members.aol.com/.../convictlake2002.jpg Location :Convict Lake, CA USA North of Bishop, and south of Mammoth on highway 395

That's exactly what I'm saying. Grad. ND filters are used to narrow your exposure range to a useable level. So I was simply wondering if he had made a mistake or was using a different filter I hadn't heard of.

That lightning one is cool, how did he expose it I wonder? He has more on the supertopo thread, including this neat one of the Alabama Hills. I have never been out there but it sure looks like a cool place to visit. http://www.photo.net/...o_id=1672626&size=lg

Jody said via e-mail that he parked in his car at the edge of the storm and braced the camera on his door. He then held the shutter open until a lightning bolt struck and then closed the shutter. The film he used I think was Fuji Velvia 100F(Whatever that is).
