Ok I have asked this to many people in the past and it might be a personal opinion question but, Do you think that Bouldering or actual climbing a route gives you a better workout. I tend to think that Bouldering gives me a better workout that climbing a route. It allows you to do a little improv on your route and do some really nasty stuff. But what do you think?

The very nature of bouldering makes for a good workout. It's very repetitious (sp?) and it allows for more climbing in a given timespan. (follow me?) You can send a few problems in the time frame that it takes to climb an actual route. Conversly when you boulder exclusively you loose your endurance. Last summer I went on a bouldering kick for about a month and then went to do some trad lines and man the first 20 feet went solid then my arms went to sh*t!

Okay, first thing you need to clarify is what you're intending to workout. If you're working out for endurance, get on the rope damnit. If you're working on your super human strength, get on Midnight Lightning. Workout cannot pertain to just one activity. There are WAY too many different each form of climbing worksout.

I feel you should mix if 50/50 or so. In winter I usally spend more time in the gym then out side so I do a little more bouldering. If you going for muscle go bouldering, if muscle dont matter go climbing.

6 weeks endurance - lots of traversing and moderate routes in a given night. 6 weeks power endurance - overhanging routes. 6 weeks power - bouldering. Read how to climb a 5.12 and Flash Training by Eric Horst. There is a lot that goes in between all this.

If you mean being pumped then both. Both can be very tiring if you try hard enough.
