Okay, I now look like a newbie apparently because I was looking at photos of Sharma working a problem on TR at the ABC. On TR????? IS that some kind of normal comp thing? Why is that even allowed? I thought all you guys despised rope.

I'm not exactly sure why they use a toprope but im guessing it's just there for saftey reason and for the climbers to focus on the actual climbing moves instead of worrying about falling or hurting themselves, cuz some of those problems are highballs? :?

But it's funny that many boulderers who use TR get laughed at...unless they're Sharma. You would think, of all people, that he wouldn't need it, right? Hey, my bones, and Sharma's, break just like anyone else's. trWhIlEbOldErInG4lYfE 8)

Yep... They had TRs set up for some hard highballs with bad landings at the PBC this year when I was there.

At the Phoenix Bouldering Comp, there were tons of problems that you had to use TR on, climbers were not given to option not to. I am almost positive it's liability thing.

In reply to: At the Phoenix Bouldering Comp, there were tons of problems that you had to use TR on, climbers were not given to option not to. I am almost positive it's liability thing. Correct. At the PBC, which "problems" will be TR and which can be done ropeless are determined by Jim Waugh and crew ahead of time. You are not allowed to do the TR designated routes ropeless--even if you are Chris Sharma. Curt

Robocop: There was a futuristic game show in this movie where contestents climbed a burning rope above a pit of rabid Doberman pincers. Another contestent bet on whether the guy would reach the top of the rope before it burned through. Using highball problems with bad landings at a comp would be EXACTLY that kind of sick entertainment. DMT

The only thing that strikes me funny about this thread is the fact that they continue to call this event the "Phoenix Bouldering Contest" instead of the "Phoenix Toproping Contest." For years, all the really high point value "problems" have been toproped routes. I guess the latter just doesn't quite have the right ring to it. Curt

That's true and unfortunately sad about the PBC They need to focus more on boulderable boulders instead of whatever's hard in the area.

In reply to: funny about this thread is the fact that they continue to call this event the "Phoenix Bouldering Contest" instead of the "Phoenix Toproping Contest." Or, they could just call it the "Phoenix CLIMBING Contest" and be done with it... after all, it's not really about what happens after you come off the wall, only before. My $0.02 I am a bit surprised that Sharma doesn't just levitate when he comes off the wall. You know he could do it if he really tried - he's half way there already! He probably just doesn't want the publicity it would cause... or maybe the gym isn't insured for the paranormal.

Curts comments about the Phoenix Toproping Contest got me to wondering and I'd be curious to hear the various opinions in the thin ether. See, I was under the impression bouldering involved climbing boulders. Does using a TR to do this render the activity lame? If so, why? Please explain how a TR is lame and a bouldering pad smashing down the veggies is less lame. Aren't they both injury prevention devices? Tr or not, seems bouldering is all about climbing boulders. So sayeth me. DMT

jesse, Most of us would appreciate it very much if you would delete the image in your last post. That kind of stuff is not welcome on this site--and violates the terms of service you agreed to when you created your account. Curt

Jesse Foust, I will do everything within my power to see that your superiors know that you are posting hard-core pornographic images on a website frequented by children. Your comments are welcome here, but please get your trash off this site. Thanks. Curt

Curt, You are violating Jesse's privacy by posting his last name. I suggest you remove it from your post. As to the photo of the lovely young lass, I wouldn't consider it hardcore since there is not any vegetable, animal or mineral protruding from either of her orifi. If you find the photo to be offensive or in violation of TOS, phucking delete it. Ban him if you have to, but don't start spouting off about reporting him to his employer. That is just wrong and you know it. The chit on this site has gone so far too far it's beyond pathetic.

*ahem* How is Curt violating Jesse's privacy by posting his last name? One's name shows up on appointment books, library cards, video rentals, anything you buy/register for on the web, and it's a matter of public record. I hardly see this as a violation of privacy. Heck, the goverment has to put those public records out there. In fact if I felt like it I could look up pru's name, find her public records, and track where she lives, how long she lives there, what her house looks like, I could tell you how many bathrooms are located in your house, I could even get live satellite images of your house/street. It's all something that is by law public record and hence - for everyone to see and access. That said, I hardly see one's last name being a violation of privacy. Maybe Curt should have posted his date of birth too, just to really set you off. *gasp*

Edit: The following post was written under the assumption that Curt is an admin on this site. He is not, and as such, my post is full of shite. I've offered my apologies, and will not delete this post because I don't believe in censorship ... even self-censorship. I'm putting this disclaimer at the beginning in the hopes of avoiding flamewars. Remember folks .. when you assume, you make an ass out of u. That's it ... just you. First of all ... thank you to whoever removed the image. This is a climbing site, and porn just doesn't belong here. Secondly, Curt ... please listen heed Pru's request and remove the offender's last name from your post if he has not posted it himself elsewhere on the forum. The TOS clearly states:
In reply to: If we are subpoenaed in an investigation of a user, we will co-operate with the relevant authorities and your information may be seized by the agencies involved. This includes, but is not limited to, submitted photographs, profile information, private messages, email, chat records, and all forum posts. Short of a legal obligation to do so, there is no acceptable reason for the owners or volunteer administrators to invade a user's privacy; such behavior is cause for review and indefinite suspension. and
In reply to: Privacy is held in high regard at rockclimbing.com .... HOWEVER, once you have divulged an item of information -- your name, your phone number, your dog's favorite color -- in a public forum or to a non-administrative user of the site, that information is no longer a secret, and we will take no action to obscure it should you change your mind. You cannot un-ring a bell, and we will silently ignore requests to do so. Since I don't know whether Curt used his admin powers to find the person's name, or whether he found it already posted on the site, I'm not going to deride or insult a mod for whom I have great respect. I hope, however, that he has not simply used his powers to threaten someone for a mistake in judgement.

In reply to: How is Curt violating Jesse's privacy by posting his last name? One's name shows up on appointment books, library cards, video rentals, anything you buy/register for on the web, and it's a matter of public record. ... however, one's name does NOT show up on rockclimbing.com unless you specifically post it. When you fill out your profile, IIRC, you are given the choice of publishing or hiding your name. If you are given the choice of hiding your name, and if the TOS offers you this privacy (it does, as I've shown in my last post), then publishing that name is against the TOS. Again, this is all assuming that Curt used his mod powers to find Jesse's name. If he has not, then all is well and I hope that Curt takes my suggestions in the light that they were intended ... constructive criticism. The last thing I want is to start another flame war. We have so many of those I'm afraid we'll start another fire here in BC. 8)
In reply to: I hardly see this as a violation of privacy. I understand your viewpoint. However, this is not a matter of opinion ... it is a matter of following the rules to which we all agreed to abide when we registered as users. Jesse clearly violated them with that picture. The question is whether Curt did by publishing the man's last name. Hopefully, this will be resolved quickly and we can get back to climbing and spraying about climbing. :) Cheers.

Well, I feel like a jackass now. :( Sorry Curt ... I apologise ... I should know better than make assumptions at my age. And thanks pte for correcting me. :) I'll leave my posts up unedited because ... well, as a warning to others about the dangers of making unwarranted assumptions.
