I'm new to climbing, but living in San Francisco, I dream of going to Yosemite. But since I live in a city, I mainly climb in a gym (Mission Cliffs).
I eventually want to learn how to climb cracks, but I'm not sure how and how good I should get before trying.
Any advice?

Once you start to climb outdoors you will learn to use crack techniques just like you learned to jug haul at the gym, on natural terrain sometimes the only holds are cracks (cool) sometimes it will be a mix of face and crack, so many of the skills you've learned at the gym will tranfer over to outdoor climbing ,it isn't as hard as it sounds, just find some friends who already climb outdoors and tag along. Just like at the gym someone will show you what's up and teach you the proper lingo. If you're a competent gym climber (leading and belaying) you're probably ready to start outdoors, if not start practicing now and you should be ready to start by summer.Best of luck!

Crack climbing is the best. Learn it soon.
I've climbed indoor cracks before; but they are no substitute for the real thing.

Mission Cliffs has some cracks to practice in on the left side of the gym. They aren't stellar, but totally worthy of trying.

Hey,
Where I come from (israel), which is the home of the best limestone, we don't even have cracks. I've been climbing everything else for a long time and always feared the moment of having to climb one.
Then came the amazing day when I had a climbing trip to Wadi-rum in Jordan ( A MUST FOR ALL CLIMBERS!!!).
This place is all sandstone cracks. I tell you my friend I LOVED every second of it.
There's one thing to remember though :
Start small. Even if you got to your 5.12's in the gym - is't a whole other story when you get on the cracks.
Go for 5.5. cracks to start with. Learn all those fendy jams. Get used to tha different style and like everything else - You will know/feel when it's time to move up on the grades scale.
