Any advice for a newbie who wants to invest in a small set of nuts/hex with a limited budget?
What are the brands to look out for? types & number of nuts/hexes etc?

I got my first set of nuts when the climbing store in my area was gettign rid of some of their overstock peices. so I got a great deal on them. If you can try to find ones that are on sale. That's one of the biggest things that got me started on trad. The discounted prices.

ABC Huevos. Basically BD stoppers but with a different color scheme.
As to hexes, well, look around, you might get lucky.

Look online or at stores like REI. A lot of companies are now selling packages for nuts, hexes, cams, quickdraws, etc. Unless you are rolling in dough, you won't be able to build up a decent size rack right away, but with the package deals and/or sales, it will give you a good start. Me and my fiance just started building up our rack last year, and we have a little ways to go before we have what I would consider a good all-around, multi-pitch rack.

http://www.northernmountain.com has the ABC Heuvos set for 60$ and the Metolius Curved Hex set for 100$. I prefer the curved hexes as i think they place better, I got the whole set because i use them alot. last weekend in the gunk maybe 40-50% of my placements were hexes. Also get some tricams. about 15$ each and they work inplace of cams. Between tricams and hexes I get by with only a couple cams.

ABC Huevos, I think $50 for #4-#13. I have BD hexes, but like Metolious curve hexes.

Use 2' sewn runners for your gear sling(s); save a couple of bucks and you can use them in a pinch. Put or add at least two extra ovals on your rack for an emergency rappel device. A couple of lockers are nice for your anchors.

Watch ebay and be patient. I've seen many BD stopper sets go for 40 to 50 bucks brand new. There's usually an auction for a set of Heuvos everyday.
On ebay there's 2 keys to note:
1. Set your limit as to how much you're willing to pay and not getting caught up in the auction. I've seen a lot of people pay more for used gear than it would've cost brand new.
2. Do your homework before bidding on anything. Research.

go with the metolius curved nuts, they are great. Also you get ten for $80 which isn't that bad.
