We were planning to go up and climb in jtree next weekend but spaced out and didn't reserve a group site. There are only about 10 of us. How hard is it to find a site if we drive up on Firday afternoon? What site would you recomend we look at first? We hope to get two sites to cover us.
Thanks alot.

What area do you plan on climbing at. And how early on Friday afternoon. When i go up there I usually try to go to Hidden Vally CG and thats almost always full so I end up going to Ryan CG. But i only have 2 or 3 other people with me and it will be different with 10. But have fun.

With that many people try Jumbo Rocks, Belle, White Tank, or Indian Cove. Indian Cove will cost you $10/night

I called nomad and they said thet our best chances would be at Jumbo, ryan, or white. We would get there around 3:30 as long as traffic isn't too bad.
I have no problem driving a bit to get to the climing.

Worse comes to worse, there's some BLM land 15 minutes away from the northwest entrance to the park.

I had to camp there last year during turkey day weekend. No water, no toilets, just pure empty land. If you can't find any place to camp, ask the park rangers at the entrance shack. They had a little map that describes how to get there.

These other camping areas - do they require reservations or is it first come, first serve?

First come first server, except Indian Cove. You can register at the Ranger Station, but if it's full, it's full. Check the NPS web site if you want reservations.
