****UPDATE****

Looks like it's on for the 15/16. Don't expect it to be very organized at all! bring a tent and your own food.

Plan on camping at the fish hatchery (directions graciously provided by nbrown at the bottom of this page)

i'm not too familiar w/the area but if someone wants to check out a nearby spot I am game...

I'm planning on being there for climbing on Saturday, the 15th.

If we camp at the fish hatchery on Friday, it's easy find at night. All well marked, paved roads. :D

i'm too redneck to take kindly to paved roads!!! if you think it's the best/most convenient place to camp, we can meet there.... so... do you?

oh and also, if there's enough room....

Ok directions are if you are coming from the south you would take I-85 all the way to Greenville then get off on exit 42 go straight on it till you get to the first road on the right which will say exit 1 or 15 (there is a toll road right off the exit that says it goes to Columbia don't take it) take a left off that road and you will be on Hwy. 25 going North. Stay on Hwy. 25 till you get to Traveler's Rest and there will be a sign for Hwy. 276 North take it. stay on it all the way when you get to Brevard 276 will make a turn right in downtown turn right and when you see Pizza Hut on your left take a left. Go down that road and when it forks take the left fork the Fish Hatchery will be on your left right before the gravel road.

Once in the Fish Hatchery parking lot go tho the far left side the farthest away from the building and there will be a trail and I think the biggest campground is after the little bridge on the trail but it is not very far from the parking lot may 100 yards or so. and that campground puts us 10 minutes from the south face trail and not much farther from the others but hope to see a lot of people there.

wait do you mean ten minutes walking or do we have to load up cars again?

hopefully many people will show but i doubt there are that many dedicated enough to make a haul in cold temps... hope it doesn't rain, eh>

what else is nearby?? if there is a large group, sport may be a better option for most people. is there a decent sport crag in driving distance?

i'm not sure if it's any good or not, cuz i've only seen it from a distance, but cedar mtn looks like it might have a few routes on it. dun quote me on this, but like i said it might be something right down the road from looking glass. good luck

There are no real sport climbing areas in NC unless you count Rumbling Bald which has sport routes but only above 5.12.

The camping area that I was talking about is just the biggest that is close by. If we have a smaller group the we can camp just about anywhere but the big one is about 10 minutes driving distance but only because of the gravel road.

Cedar Rock is also mostly trad I have never climbed there but I heard it was awesome but it is close to Looking Glass and will have not even half of the crowd.

Rumbling Bald has one or two bolted 5.9s. A trad 5.7 or either of 2 sport 5.10s puts you on a ledge at the base of two very pleasant sport 5.8s. There are a number of bolted 5.10s. Lakeview is a classic.

I heard a rumor that a section of Cedar Rock has a multipitch bolted 5.6.

FYI On many of the moderates at the south face of Looking Glass, people just do the first pitch and the belays are spacious i.e. rat's ass, second coming, so doing TRs is not that big of a deal.

the newest guide is Selected Climbs in North Carolina. it has some newer trails and much more info as for route description. the older guide is the climber's guide to north carolina by thomas kelly, i believe. this book doesn't include rumbling bald.
