The developers are working on a random interface to the photos of the site here: www.rockclimbing.com/photo/random_rate.php Right now it allows you to browse through photos that have less than 10 votes and allow voting. If you don't want to vote on a photo leave the vote menu at "Rate This Photo" If you don't want to comment on a photo, leave the comment box empty. then press the vote/comment button. if you aren't privilaged to vote, the vote box shouldn't appear. I am already thinking to improve the page: Allow the user to set the Maximum number of votes. Allow the user to set a field to only view photos that he/she has not voted on Check it out and please post your requests for improvements here:

Maybe a feature to autogenerate (statically, on disk) a bunch of thumbnails so that users are presented a screen like a 'lightbox' full of smaller images, with links to view full-size and/or rate them, would be worth pursuing. If you're feeling saucy, that is :-) Great job man!

I'm not really feeling saucy .. but I would like to know the SQL syntax so that I can join the Votes Table with the Photos table so that I can select only photos that the user hasn't voted on. .. might it be easier to select all the ones that the user has voted on, then remove that list from the entire list of results?

yeah this is really cool. i got sucked in for about 20 minutes. one of my own pics came up but it didn't let me rate it again 8) oh well. whose idea was this? your implementation is great! the only suggestion I can think of is that you put date posted (if available) and type of picture (topo, profile, trad, sport, aid ...). type of picture is nice because I rate topos differently than profiles differently than climbing differently than artistic ...

yeah Biff you did a great job on the subtle details! not showing the photographer or the rating beforehand -- eliminate bias/groupthink good deal. kind of like the photo.net interface but with rc.com-specific features. sweet! I'll see what I can do about the join you requested.

I have to scroll down every time to see a pic or even to just go to the next photo. I suggest you shove all that header crap out of the way so the photo will fit on the screen. And the movement buttons should be at the top, not the bottom. Or better yet, BOTH! Cheers DMT

Let's not have a discussion about our db schema in a public forum :) I'll email some possibilities to our CVS list. Also, how about a rating filter? And a "Skip" button so you don't have to rate certain photos?

Dingus: I intentionally put the stuff at the bottom so you would have to see the whole picture before voting on it, or skiping to the next. .. Maybe I will put a next photo button at the top, but that would just add more things at the top .. maybe if I can do it without taking another line. As far as header crap, I think eveything that I have above the photo is necessary, I want to give credit to the photographer of the last photo, and give the user an oppertunity to see other photographs from him/her. I want to see the description of the photo so that I can get an understanding of what the photographer was trying to capture. If you have a spesific beef with one of the things above the photo please let me know, maybe you can change my mind. ERic: thanks alot for your help with the SQL, and efficency Updates. As far as a skip button, if you don't select a value in the vote box and don't put a comment in the comment box, they won't be added. This needs to be more clear. Here are 3 options that I came up with none of which I like, I would really like some input on this. 1) add a button that says No vote/comment 2) add /skip to the current button 3) put small text "Leaving the vote/comment empty will not add a vote/comment" or something under the vote/comment button NeroShock: thanks for the SQL, but the database we use right now doesn't allow searches like that, Eric had to create a 2 stage search to get things to work, but it is prety much like what you suggested, Thanks. OrangeKyak: I think adding that information is a good Idea .. I will try to add it so that it takes up as little room as possible

This is a U/I correct? Here's a novel thought... why not incorporate the users' needs into your U/I code? I mean you no personal offense, but this is classic "the end user doesn't know jack shit" developer speak. Bottom line: If I have to scroll down to navigate the tool, or even to see the entire photo, I won't use it. Simple as that. DMT

man, this is addictive... I really enjoy the "rate my xxxxx" kind interface, no more vote-back-back-scroll-select pic-vote-back-back-scroll-select pic. I would suggest including pictures with waay many votes as well. Why not? I can see the motivation, but there might be some high volume voted pics, which I might have missed... To prevent overload, you can put some ratio, %90 with pics not much voted and %10 with pics already voted a lot. About automatically skipping pictures already voted by me, you can also do it simply checking the pic whether it is voted by me or not, before displaying. If so, restart picture selection process. A final SQL solution is nicer though. Very nice work, and damn you all, I should have been working  edited: because I am dumb and have missed the fact that I can use vote button without a vote as a skip process..... edited second time: because I was lazy and havent read previous db discussions

sbclimber: right now the only way is to access it though this form .. or add it to your favouries/bookmarks. People who read this thread are like beta testers .. so that if the interface really sucked we didn't get a bunch of bug reports saying how crappy it is. .. I think the page will be fully integreated into the site by next monday. here is a link for those who just came here: http://www.rockclimbing.com/photo/random_rate.php

glad to hear there are other time wasters here. I just did some quick queries on how many photos I have voted on. Since this Spring I have voted on over 2100 (in spring I deleted all of my own votes by accident) I think rrradam is the only one who has wasted more time than me. Polarwid is damn close too.

Hey this is really really good Biff. I like it a lot. It almost rivals the pic critique forum.

In reply to: glad to hear there are other time wasters here. I just did some quick queries on how many photos I have voted on. Is there a way for us to check this? I think it would be cool to have "photo critique stats" such as ... number of photos rated, number of photos commented, and average rating

In reply to: Is the description always the same? No, they were different photos, but at least in 2 different occations I am sure it was petes photo. I am guessing from the description, he uses bold fonts, and stuff....
In reply to: are you sure that the page has finished loading yeah, i am pretty sure. At first I thought it was that, but than it happened a couple more times. When I refresh the the page, another picture came without a problem. If I encounter again, I will take a note of the pic. Maybe its just my browser ??

melekzek: it could be your browser .. I have noticed some images in Firebird (latest Mozilla) don't like to load .. but I have never had that problem on this site. orangekyak: I was planing on making votes public in the future, then you could see these type of stats in the users profile: Biff has wasted his time voting on over 2000 photos with an average of 6 View some of Biffs favourite photos (a link to sort photos by what I rated things) View some of Biff's Least Favouite photos.
