I was wondering if anybody else had a stupid climbing mistake. Mine is pretty stupid. I was repelling down using a figure 8 and my hair which was half way down my back got caught and started to get sucked into the figure 8  . Right away I stopped going down but since the route was an overhang I had no place to put my feet. So here I am 80 feet up with my hair caught in my figure 8, the only thing that saved me was it was on the 4th day of climbing with out any shower so my blond hair was really grease and I was able to pull my hair out along with ripping a small patch out of my head. Needless to say that was a big reason why I cut my hair to my shoulder.

Funny, Same thing happened to my wife the first time I took her climbing. I paniced and ran down this crazy face at Joshua Tree to help her. She got herself free just as I got there. There was a guy on a bike on the ground looking up at me with his jaw on thte floor. I guess I downclimbed a 5.9 in record time, sans rope.

I carry a prussik with me just for situations like that. I had to rescue my daughter before, not much fun.

I was rapping off Hercule's Finger (Lucerne Valley, CA) in super high winds. About halfway down, my pony tail got blown around and got sucked into my ATC. I was using an 11mm rope at the time and thought I was screwed. After stopping and calming down, I gave my pony tail a slow, firm tug and fortunately, it pulled free. Now I tuck my pony tail into my shirt whenever I rap and require any other longhairs rapping on my rope to do the same.

Yep, happened here too. One nice thing about having dreads though is being able to just rip one or two out of my atc is no big deal. A prussik would be handy in such a situation, i suppose. I'd just use a knife. :?

On my wife's second day (ever) climbing with me, I took a fall on toprope w/ a bit too much slack in the line. She was anchored, but got yanked forward and shook around a bit. She yelped in pain, and when I got down I found out why. SHe had gotten a rather sensitive piece of flesh pinched in the atc. She now always wears a sports bra to prevent further occurences of "belay-boob" as it is now affectionately known. Ouch. You know, ever since, she has been a remarkably concientious belayer.

OUCH! Mine's not a climbing story, but a camping story on my first climbing trip. A friend and I went up to Courthouse Rock in RRG to do some climbing. We sent a couple V0's the first afternoon. As a thank you for helping me learn the sport, I told him that I would chop the wood for the fire. As I was finishing up my last log... *whack*... PAIN! I took a nice healthy chunk of skin, tissue, and (as I later found out) bone out of my shin. He wanted to call in the MediVac, but I told him that "A good night's sleep would make it all better." DUMB! We ended up climbing Courthouse the next morning (with pain shooting throughout my body) and a couple easy V1's. Ok, so like I said... it's not a climbing story, but I just thought it would liven things up a bit. :) And yes... I AM smarter than that now. josh

I used to have a big bushy beard. It got stuck in my rappel rig on a free-hanging rappel. The only thing I could do was let it get ripped out. Ouch! Than night I shaved. Mal

This hair question reminds me about how all my frequent climbing shirts get bellybutton holes in them from the atc from both rappeling and lowering. People goose me a lot through that hole too.

Sucks, doesn't it. I used to have really long hair and it got caught in my ATC while rapping one day. By myself. So I just tightned my hair as tight as I could and knawed away at it until I ate thru it. It worked.

I saw that happen to a girl rapping down the main wall at Stoney Point. Her hair was hopelessly jammed in her device. While she hung there cursing and yelling, her guide had to run down to the car and back for a rope so he could rap to her and give her a haircut on the spot. She was pissed. :?

This is one of those things you do once, then never repeat. Now you know why I always tuck it into a beenie, or do the "barbie-samurai bun" on the top, especially when I know I'm going to be rapping later.

I got one better.... I was in Moab a couple winters back, was canyoneering in Medevil Chamber then hiked across to Morning Glory Arch to do a free rapel off it. Was using a rapel rack at the time. It's about 150 ft of open air rapel off the top of the arch. About halfway down I leaned over too much to the right looking down and ZIP!! The hair on my left side of my face went into the rapel rack..WAY into the rack. And it was a free rapel so I didn't have anything to weight myself against to try to get it out. Now these days when I get it caught in the ATC (yes, it still happens...even when I wear it in a ponytail my hair is like a magnet to those damn things on rapel) I can usually save the hair without much damage. But this was a good chunk, and a rapel rack is way harder to remove caught hair from. It was pulling my head so close to it it was almost impossible for me to even move. I think I just ripped the chunk off eventually - had about 5 inches of save-able hair still on and got down the rest of the rap. Got back home eventually and had my hair trimmed so that side kinda shagged a little so that the short chunk was less noticeable and it grew out well in the long run. Was the last time I ever used a rapel rack, that's for sure  .

My dog got her tail caught in an atc on rappel. She had scrambled up an easy slab climb next the one we were on and couldn't get down by herself. Good thing I keep a knife on my harness :D .
