Just putting the finishing touches on Vol. 1 of the new Josh guide which also includes a fairly detailed history of climbing in the Park from the 1950s to 1978/9. (Vol.2 will have 1979 on) I am still doing some research on early climbing in Josh (late 1940s to early 1960s). Mike Loughman, author of "Learning to Rock Climb" climbed in Josh beginning in the 1950s and apparently made the first ascent of Mike's Books in 1955? I am trying to locate Mike to talk with him about the early Josh days. Anyone have any current contact info for him? Also, I would be interested in speaking to anyone else who was around Josh during the early Josh days.

fred? if you find the ex-Dr. of Indian Rock, don't forget to get him to verify his watching Royal Robbins free-solo the lower right ski track in the late 50's.... that one always impressed the hell outta me

In reply to: fred? if you find the ex-Dr. of Indian Rock, don't forget to get him to verify his watching Royal Robbins free-solo the lower right ski track in the late 50's.... that one always impressed the hell outta me Thanks to everyone's help, I have found and spoken to Mike a couple of times now. He was able to give some interesting accounts of climbing at Josh in 1954 and 1956. He does not say he saw RR solo Lower Right Ski Track, but says that at the campfire that evening (in Fall 1954) others were talking about RR's soloing exploits and he thinks LRST was one of the routes soloed by RR. When I spoke to Royal, he didn't really have a clear recollection of this route, but had some other valuable info. Lots of the old timer (original JT climbers) of the 1950s have helped a lot in trying to reconstruct JTree's early climbing history.

It's nice that you are putting together all of this info. With thousands of routes in the old edition, I might not really feel the need for the newer one, but I'd get it to read good stories.
