Just like to know how many of you out there managed to conquer your fear of heights, if you ever had any? When I convinced my wife to start finally climbing she was petrified of heights, and over time she got over it. It did take a while but she pursevered.

Rock on.

I started climbing as a kid a long, long time ago in part because I wanted to overcome a wicked fear of heights. To this day, I can't stand outside on a hotel balcony. But I have made ascents on mountains from 6 to 14 thousand feet. Climbing continues to dampen my fears. Okay, so I will never be a big wall climber Yosemite? forget it). But I love short pitch rock. My sons are both scared of heights as well. When they started, they could barely go 5 feet up an indoor wall. Today, they are topping out on serious overhangs.

When i'm on the rock, I have no fear. I've climb up t0 10 pitch high routes, and i dont even think about it. I dunno if i'm weird, but i get totally freaked on ledges, I mean, i can get to and off the ledge with no fear, but sitting or resting on it scares the crap outta me, even if it's just 30 feet off the deck. Strange.

I'm kinda terrified of heights. It's weird.

I need reassurance from my gear every time I climb. Once I fall, I will be fine. Each and every climb.

I'm such an oddball.

When I started climbing, sure I was scared but the more you learn about the equipment and how it all works you have less reasons to be scared.
If your a scared climber then you should probaly learn more about your gear and your ability.

It's kinda like the song..."I don't know what it is about the edge of a cliff that makes me want to get so close to it." I do feel a bit afraid at the tops of routes, but that just adds to the climb.

Scared silly of heights...until I hear the click of the "biner" and know I'm hooked into something. Then the fear is 100% gone.Still won't peer over the side of my bed unless I clip in though.

When I am top-roping, I have no problem with the heights. But when I am attempting to lead one of those tough 5.10's, thats when the palms start to get a little bit sweaty and the heart starts to race. For this reason I don't think that I will ever be able to solo aything higher than 10 ft. but oh well. I'm sure it will just take a couple more years of climbing to get used to the heights (for me anyways).

One of the reasons I started climbing was to overcome my fear of heights. It sorta worked in that I'm still afraid of heights if I'm not tied/clipped in to something, but once my harness goes on and I know I'm anchored, the fear dissipates.

so i used to be afraid of heights....but now its not that bad . however...when climbing and i get on one of those diagonally running slab ramps, and i am almost crawling looking down, i dont really feel too good. also chairlifts sometimes make me feel uncomfortable cause im not in control of the situation.

I'm alright with hights untill people and buildings start to look like ants. I've only been up that high in a plane so I don't know how I'm going to react on a Big Wall. I can't wait to find out though!

I get kind queasy when i'm just standing like at the edge of a cliff or on top of a talll building or even on top of my house for that matter, but when I'm tied in, its all gone and I can relax. I thoght Devils tower would be a problem but as long as I was tied in, all was well.

Protection is your friend!! I am a little bit scared every time I climb. That is part of the experience. It's quit a rush. Just be safe!!

The most gripped I've ever been was using a ladder (solo) in a high wind to go to the top of a two story building. If the ladder slipped, I was dust. The second most gripped I've been was free soloing a 5.5 in the rain to get to the Bishop's Balcony roof to to aid solo it on rope.

I'm really scared of heights, but when using rope and pieces, with a good partner, the fear just goes away. I've taken 30' whippers that were no where near as scary as that ladder gig, or free soloing "easy 5.5" in the rain.
