In reply to: In reply to: coffee before, water during, and beer (preferrably Mexican) after. Couldn't have said it better. 8) same for me, but I prefer german beer or guiness ;-)

Magic Coffee: Strong Expresso + lots of sugar. You can climb anything after drinking some :) always take some in a flask with me to the crag! Otherwise its water or cordial for me!

Newcastle Brown Ale. On tap. In a frozen mug. With a pretty girl. What were we talking about, again?

Gatorade (Strawberry) or OJ. Can't stand Mountain Dew. Culture bias, I suppose. I remember when they were marginal, nobody I knew actually drank the stuff, and they came out with the "Do the Dew" ad campaign trying to associate themselves with "Extreme Sports!" Irritated the crap out of me because they depicted themselves as an essential part of things I liked to do, but I never, ever, ever saw anyone drinking the stuff. Good job on the ad campaign, guys. It's worked like a charm, but I still don't drink it.

In reply to: I have to ask what is a bloody beer? I am guessing he was talking about beer and tomato juice.... its actually pretty damn good. Another good one is 2/3 beer and 1/3 orange juice (no pulp). First time I had that, I was hooked. Its awesome with Hefeweizen !!! As far as climbing... its gatorade - mix it with extra water in the Nalgene, and a Nalgene bladder full of water. I don't suggest putting anything but water into something that can't be washed in a dishwasher... unless you don't mind scrubbing with a bottle brush.

Also... some cool facts on the history of Mtn. Dew ... http://mountaindew.com/about_dew/history/index.php You will be interested to know that Mtn. Dew was originally created to be a mixer with Whiskey :D Been there, done that. Do the Dew.

Water, water, and more water. I might add a couple slices of lemon to the water, and perhaps a dash of salt. After it's over, and we're back at camp or the pub, it's a good beer... Bass, O'Dell's 90 Schilling, Fat Tire, etc. Friends don't let friends drink cheap beer.

There are some damn educated responses here but these dew people are clearly uncivilized! Just the fact that it was invented to add to whiskey is abhorrant because any cultured drinker knows that the only time you're allowed to add a non-alcoholic beverage to alcohol (except water/ice) is south of 30*. My God, man, have some respect for the beverage, please. Good answers include "beer during and scotch after" and "anything that will fit into my flask". That is proper drinking. All coffee before climbing references are just plain smart. Not only do friends not let friends drink cheap beer, but they don't let them not drink coffee. It's an ergogenic, for Chrissakes! Beer during climbing is a good choice as it's mainly water. Apri-climb, begin with a martini (gin, of course, shaken like a tornado) before dinner and never more than two. Red wine is taken with dinner, of course. Post dinner my choice is a good single malt whisky (UK) or single barrell whiskey (US). If it's a rather festive evening, always finish with beer to rehydrate. "This is not Nam. There are rules." - Walter Sobchak Le Stephanois Nacirema Drinking Society www.drinkingsociety.com * the exception being that gin and tonic is acceptable in any country that was at one time part of the British empire.

In reply to: I have to ask what is a bloody beer? A WV Bloddy Marry or as the other poster so correctly put it V8 + Beer. Was first introduced to it after my first time at Seneca at a bar in Elkins.

1 cup of tea, 6 cups of coffee, 1/2 gallon of water, 1quart of either grape juice or Gatoraide, 1 beer preferably dark. This is all on a warm day. If it is not warm out I usually leave out the juice. I have to announce to all that this is my 100th post. trillium

Fluid? Check. Non-toxic? Check. Doesn't dissolve the interior of the nalgene-that's-been-through-hell (baccardi, schnapps, beer, kahlua, cheap beer, tequila, vodka, whiskey, unidentifiable based on smell and flavor; and water still tastes good coming out of it!)? Check. 2 red bulls or 1 Sobe adrenaline rush fit well into it, and it fits into my coat exceedingly well.

“I am a climber purely for drinking reasons.” Now, imagine how silly that sounds? Well, it only sounds silly when you reflect upon 90% of the answers so far posted on this thread. The fact that the question elicits one word, two or three word responses is a bit disconcerting. Sugar drinks, bad coffee with sugar, bad beer, bad drinking etiquette…all of these equals short attention span and lazy thinking. It smacks of a serious absence of vision. I might suggest the following: If you like climbing so much (and if you like drinking so much), stop and think about what you’re doing. If you find yourself taking it like a high school sport, then have your Gatorade and mountain dew. Some are just cut from a different cloth. But if you find you respect the rock, enjoy lines and moves before grades and tick lists, then try a nice bourbon during and after a day of climbing. Bring a flask filled with a cheap but nice whiskey, such as Jim Beam or Old Overholt. A good drink after a day of climbing is a firm bridge to the loftier subtleties the night may have to offer. Johnny Sing __________ “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” --Elmer Gantry
